Friday Favorites: Book Club Edition

I love to read, when I was younger I used to read everywhere…on the bus, walking down the hall, during math class – you know, the usual. Lately, I haven’t made a lot of time for reading, but I want to pick it pack up again. There are a number of books on my list, but these five really stood out to me and I want to read them all by the end of the year:

1. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that this is now a movie with Ben Affleck. It looks great and I want to read it ASAP before someone spoils it for me. John mentioned to me the other day that he wanted to see the movie, so I want to read it first.

Update: I just finished reading this and holy crap was it twisted! I can’t stop thinking about it! John wants to go see the movie and I can’t wait, mostly because I want to talk to him about it, but don’t want to ruin it for him.

2. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

This book was chosen by my book club and I really don’t know too much about it yet, just that I have to read it by October 26th.

Update: I just finished this book for my book club. At first I was reluctant to read this, but it was not what I expected at all. I learned so much and think this is a book that everyone should read. I also found out that Oprah is working to make this an HBO movie but there aren’t too many details yet.

3. How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are: Love, Style, and Bad Habits by Anne Berest, Audrey Diwan, Caroline de Maigret, and Sophie Mas

I first saw this book on another blog and it looks really interesting. I think this could be a really fun beach/travel read.

4. The Creation of Anne Boleyn by Susan Bordo

A month ago, I got obsessed with watching The Tudors and loved it! I wanted to learn more about Anne Boleyn and the The Tudors and after some research I found this book. I’ve already started reading it and it is really interesting. If you haven’t watched The Tudors, you can On Demand the entire series for free.

5. Left Behind by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins

I first got into this series in college but never finished the series as the books were still coming out. I did see the original movies with Kirk Cameron and really liked them. Now that they made a new movie with Nicolas Cage I figured it would be the perfect time to get back into them. If you aren’t familiar the series is based on what could happen after the Rapture takes place and how a core group of people survives through the trials and tribulations predicted in the book of Revelations.

What books are currently on your reading list? If you’ve read any of these I would love to know what you think.

  6. Gone Girl was great, and if you like it, her book Dark Places is also good (and is also being made into a movie, with Charlize Theron). That Immortal Life book sounds interesting but I too haven’t heard of it / don’t know what the plot is about.
