Summer 2015 Favorites

It’s summer, summer, summertime…time to sit back and unwind. That is exactly what I plan to do this summer. I’m not teaching this semester and I plan to enjoy every second of it with John in our new house! Since Sunday marked the first day of summer, I thought it was time to share my summer favorites with you.

Kate Spade Pineapple iPhone Case ($45)

I’m sort of loving pineapples right now and they scream summer, so I figured a fun summer iPhone case would be a great way to lighten the mood.

Layered Split Back Cami ($23.99)

I love hot pink anything for summer and I love this split back cami!

OPI Chiffon My Mind Nail Polish

I have noticed women sporting white nail polish lately and sort of love it for summer. I reviewed a few different colors and decided that I like Chiffon My Mind the best because it has a slight sheen to it.

OPI chiffon my mind

Vince Camuto Crochet-Trim A-Line Skirt ($73.99)

I really wanted a white eyelet skirt for summer and I liked the length of it and the pattern.

YSL Rouge Volupté Sheer Candy Glossy Lip Balm ($34)

This is one of my favorites, I love 004, the Succulent Pomegranate color. I got it a while back when Emily Maynard wore it on the Bachelorette, but I’ve finally used it all up and need another. This is sheer, almost like lipbalm but provides a great pop of color!

YSL volupte

Sam Edelman Grella Sandal ($66)

I really need a pair of gold flat sandals and I’ve had these on my list for a while. They are so elegant.

Bath & Body Works Coconut Vanilla Candle ($22.50)

I am in an island/coconut type mood so why not turn my house into a tropical paradise this summer?

Kate Spade Lily Avenue Kiki Clutch ($171)

I need a plain black clutch with gold embellishments to use when I have gold jewelry and accessories. I loved the scalloped detail on this clutch for summer.

FlashTat ($25)

These are gold foil temporary tattoos that you can use to accessorize. They last about 4-6 days so you can have fun with them on a weekend or summer vacation.

Another Love Song Maxi Dress ($40)

I love a maxi dress for the summer…it is cool, comfortable and easy to throw on in a hurry. It’s basically like wearing your pajamas out, but fancy. I just need to keep building my collection.

Friday Favorites: Picnic Favorites

I am in the middle of working on an epic summer bucket list that I will be sharing soon, but it made me realize that I am ill-prepared for picnics or outdoor concerts or movies. I figured I would make a list of my picnic favorites for this Friday’s post so I can get ready to have the best summer ever. Here are my must have items:

1. Outdoor Blanket and Tote ($34.99)

I liked this blanket better than some of the other ones I saw because the underside was water resistant. I hate having water seep through your blanket so that spoke to me. I also like how it folds up into a little carrying tote making it easier to get around.

outdoor blanket

2. Meritage Deluxe Insulated Wine and Cheese Tote ($69.99)

I thought this was the perfect way to travel. You can bring two bottles of wine and it includes glasses, cutting board, knife, corkscrew and more. It even has room for cheese and crackers.

wine tote

3. Wine Stakes Set ($13.99)

These are great for outdoor events so you don’t spill your wine everywhere.

wine stakes

4. Off! Deep Woods Insect Repellent Towelettes ($5.49)

John and I are both mosquito magnets so we can’t go halfway on repellents. These Off wipes are just the thing to make sure we can have fun outdoors and not pay for it the following week with mosquito bites.

OFF

5. Malibu Solar Firefly Jar ($16.95)

I like the idea of having some sort of light outdoors, but nothing too bright or intrusive for the activity. I loved the whimsical look of the faux firefly jar.

What are your favorite picnic items? Let me know so I can include them on my summer adventures this year!

Spring 2015 Favorites

I couldn’t wait to do my spring favorites post this year. I am SO ready for spring and everything that comes along with it. This year is especially exciting because we will spend our first spring in the new house and I can’t wait to enjoy every second of it! It is still pretty cold in Michigan but the snow is almost gone and we are starting to see signs of spring life around every corner. I am ready to jump into spring with some fun colors and this year’s favorite things:

Kate Spade Cedar Street Maise Satchel ($298)

I have been eyeing this pretty in pink bag from Kate Spade for a while now – there’s no time like the present to add this to your spring wardrobe!

I stumbled across these the other day and thought they were SO perfect for spring!

NLH72_G_JustLanai-ingAround

Lauren Ralph Lauren Lace Crepe Dress ($194)

I originally saw this dress on Bloomingdale’s site but they only had one size left, so I had to hunt it down until I found it in my size. I LOVE this dress, it is perfect for Easter!

Kate Spade Little Ladybug Thin Cuff ($88)

John and I love ladybugs! They are a sign of good luck and this cuff is adorable!

Kate Spade Ladybug

Trench Cape ($124.60)

This is from The Limited’s Scandal Collection and I thought it was such a fun way to wear a trench this spring.

MAC Flat Out Fabulous Lipstick ($16)

This was Kaitlyn’s favorite lipcolor from The Bachelor and I’m sure we will see more of it on The Bachelorette.

The Limited Open Front Blazer ($76.80)

What’s spring without some Tiffany blue to add to your wardrobe? I need to add some different color blazers to my wardrobe and this will do just the trick!

Vince Camuto Sleeveless Color Leopard Print Blouse ($79)

I thought this blouse was a lot of fun for spring!

Since I am an old married lady, I wanted to take this opportunity to say HELLO to my friend Amanda. You may remember her, from our trip to Seattle, where we went to her wedding this past May. I was looking for a photo of just us two and found this one from a few years back when we rushed the field after a Michigan game.

Throwback Thursday: Our Engagement Story

I mentioned in my Blogiversary post, that I had a few new post ideas up my sleeve. Since I started this blog two years after my wedding, I never got to share any of those fun memories here. I wanted to do this Throwback Thursday series to share a little bit more about myself so you could get to know me better. This is so much fun for me to write. Pulling out our engagement album made me so happy remembering how I felt at that moment.

After we got engaged, I wrote down our story so I wouldn’t forget any of it:

John had decided to propose during our trip to Anna Maria Island, Florida for a wedding in April 2009. This was our first long trip together and we had a lot of fun making the plans. The wedding was beautiful and we had a great time! John even mentioned to the groom that he was thinking about proposing.

Over the next month, John started researching rings. He wanted to get a ring that looked similar to a Tiffany ring that I had admired. While I was in San Diego for a friend’s wedding, John was busy going to five jewelry stores, shopping around and trying to find the perfect ring. He finally purchased a beautiful ring. John also took a trip to my parent’s house to ask my father’s permission to propose to me.

We both had 4th of July weekend free so John planned a trip to Toledo where we would go to a MudHens game and take a trip to the Toledo Zoo to see the elephants. This was something we wanted to do for a long time and John planned the entire trip and sent me an email with all the trip details.

When I returned from San Diego I noticed that John had lost weight and I was surprised that he hadn’t spent the week partying with his friends. I had no idea that he had been worried about getting the ring on time and nervous about the proposal.

Every time John and I went on a trip or took a long weekend, one of my coworkers, would ask “Do you think he’s going to propose?” I would always laugh and say “Oh no, he’s not going to propose for a long time.” When I told her that we were going to Toledo for 4th of July weekend she asked if I thought he would propose to me. I said “Oh no…he’s not going to propose in TOLEDO!” I had no idea that he was even thinking about proposing, I just assumed that the trip was something nice for my upcoming birthday.

On our drive down to Toledo I spent the whole trip talking about weddings and what I would do if we ever got married. I told him that my coworker had asked me if I thought he would propose on our trip and told him “I said, oh no, he wouldn’t propose in TOLEDO!” I even suggested a song that we should play as we were entering our reception. I was reading US magazine which happened to be Kendra’s wedding album and I kept running my mouth about weddings, weddings, weddings. I also saw an ad for a shirt that said “He put a ring on it” and thought that was hilarious. The whole time not knowing that John had a ring in his suitcase.

When we got to the Crowne Plaza and walked into our room I was so surprised! It was a beautiful room with a river view and we would have a great view of the fireworks later in the evening. When we walked in I said “This is pretty nice! I guess you could propose in TOLEDO!”

We had a few drinks before the game and while I was admiring the view, John retrieved the ring from his suitcase. When I turned around he started telling me how important I was to him and how much he loved me and then he got down on one knee to propose. I thought he was joking because of all the comments I had made throughout the day. I told him to be serious. I didn’t realize he was actually proposing until he presented me with a beautiful ring and asked me to marry him. I almost fell over before saying yes!

I took a few pictures in the hotel before the proposal, and I think this captures it perfectly. He must have been so nervous at this point because he proposed about two minutes after this photo:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After the proposal, we had tickets to the Toledo Mudhens game and we could not stop smiling.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The next day, I wanted to walk down by the river and take a few photos to commemorate the occasion:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThen we headed off to the zoo and had some fun with ring pictures:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASince we went to see the elephants, we had to get this picture:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was the most wonderful trip and one of the best weekends of my life. In the morning at breakfast, before the zoo, we made a lot of wedding decisions about what we both wanted. I remember walking around the zoo just beaming the whole time…I was on cloud nine!

We had a blast telling all of our family and friends that we were engaged over the following week. When we officially announced our engagement on social media, I shared this picture:

I hope this gave you a little peak into who I am. I am a romantic at heart and would love to hear your engagement stories, whether they are recent or from years ago!

Chili’s® at Home Heats Up the Frozen Food Aisle

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Bellisio Foods, but my love for their tasty, bold and quick meals is all my own!

You may remember my post from a few weeks ago when I mentioned that our basement flooded with sewage. Well ever since then, our house has been a disaster while we are waiting for our basement to be re-carpeted. Because of all this, I haven’t really felt like entertaining. Since football kicked off, my husband decided that he wanted to have a friend over to watch some of the games. Normally, I would send them down to the man cave to enjoy the game and maybe bring down some snacks. Since I haven’t been shopping since the flood, I didn’t really have anything to offer them. Enter Bellisio Foods to my rescue!

Earlier this year, Bellisio Foods partnered with Chili’s® Grill & Bar to introduce a new line of licensed Chili’s®-inspired frozen meals — boldly flavored and deliciously prepared to enjoy at home. I was able to whip up a few of these great frozen entrees for the boys and myself to enjoy while watching the game.

chilis7

I ran up to my local Meijer and stocked up on a few different options and the boys decided that they wanted to try them all. If you don’t have a Meijer close by, you can get them at Walmart, Kroger, Safeway, Food Lion, H-E-B, Giant Eagle, Schnucks and pretty much any major retailer.

chilis1

There was quite a selection of bold, southwestern flavors and I decided on the Cheesy Chicken Pasta Florentine, Chicken Bacon Ranch, Cajun-Style Chicken Alfredo and Pepper Jack Mac ‘N’ Cheese.

chilis2

Chili’s® at Home has a variety of different entrees to choose from and they also have multi-serve meals in case you are having a few people over. You can choose from:

Single-Serve Entrees

  • Bacon Mac ‘N’ Cheese
  • Cajun-Style Chicken Alfredo
  • Cheesy Chicken Pasta Florentine
  • Chicken Bacon Ranch
  • Chicken Fajita Rice Bowl
  • Island Chicken & Rice
  • Mango Chicken with Rice
  • Pepper Jack Mac ‘N’ Cheese

Multi-Serve Meals

  • Bacon Mac ‘N’ Cheese
  • Chicken Bacon Ranch
  • Chicken Fajita Rice
  • Nacho Potatoes with Beef & Bacon
  • Seasoned Chicken Bites with Honey Chipotle Sauce

I thought Chili’s® at Home frozen entrees were so convenient, but the best part was that they had big, bold taste and weren’t bland like some other frozen foods. John loves spicy food and you definitely got that flavor with these dishes. In his words, he loved his entree! He tried the Cheesy Chicken Pasta Florentine. I tried the Chicken Bacon Ranch, our friend Mark tried the Cajun-Style Chicken Alfredo and we all tried the Pepper Jack Mac ‘N’ Cheese. I really liked the taste and that none of the entrees were over 500 calories (a big plus in my book).

Chilis Collage

I could have probably been sneaky about it and they would have never know that I made frozen dinners – you don’t normally get that kind of bold seasoning in regular frozen foods.

The new line of Chili’s® at Home frozen foods is inspired by some of the restaurants most popular dishes. If you are an avid Chili’s diner you will definitely see some familiar combinations.

I was thrilled to be able to serve something delicious and not spend the day cooking. Until we get the house back in order, I will definitely be getting more Chili’s at home meals to tide us over.

If you are interested in trying Chili’s® at Home, you can head over to the website and get a coupon for your favorites.

Which Chili’s at Home meal would you have for a big night in?

Our Basement Flooded with Sewage…Send Drinks!

This past Monday, Detroit experienced a record-breaking four inches of rain which caused massive flooding throughout the city. If you are reading this from somewhere other than Michigan, you may have missed all the craziness. We had people abandoning their cars on our major freeways because the flood waters were so high. In most neighborhoods in the suburbs basements flooded. We were one of the unfortunate causalities of the floods. Our basement flooded with about a foot of sewage water.

flooding

flooding 2

As you can see it was pretty disgusting and it smelled terrible as well. Unfortunately, the basement was John’s man cave and he lost most of his stuff. With sewage water you pretty much have to throw everything away.

We spent the entire week clearing the basement and living with the smell. This is our big trash pile.

flooding4

I am happy to report that the basement has been officially and thoroughly cleared and sterilized.

flooding3

The bad news is that our renter’s insurance didn’t cover any of this, as we didn’t purchase the sewage backup rider.

The good news is that our landlord is working to fix the drywall and should have everything re-carpeted in the next few weeks. He has also decided to re-carpet the main floor, so once we can move all of our tubs of stuff back to the basement, we have to clear the entire main floor so they can carpet.

All of this is a tad overwhelming, not just because we lost so much of our stuff, but because it is a lot of work to get through in a short amount of time. In the next month our entire basement and main floor will be packed up. At this point I feel like we should just move since we are already packed up. Currently, we have tubs upon tubs of stuff in our living room and I actually am using one as a foot rest as I can’t really sit on my couch.

We could use some encouragement this week so I thought this verse was perfect:

bible verse

I have to also take a moment and thank my wonderful parents who were here everyday helping us pack up the basement. We couldn’t have done it without them and we are truly blessed to have them in our lives!

To all of my readers who have experienced flooding this week I encourage you to stay strong and hang in there! This will all be over soon!

If you have any tips for me during the cleanup/packing I would love to hear them!

Weekend Recap: I Met Nicholas Brendon!

I had a fantastic weekend! So much fun, lots of girl time and a moment that my fourteen year-old self went crazy for!

First up, I took my Event Planning students on a field trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts for Samurai: Behind the Armour Fashion Show. This was hosted by the Detroit Garment Group Guild. They tasked 10 local designers to create looks based on the DIA’s current Samurai exhibit and the public voted for their favorites. It was a great example of a fashion show for my students and we were blown away by the awesome looks. My gal pal Andrea tagged along with me and took some amazing photos:

Samurai 7 Samurai 8 Samurai 9

After the fashion show, we headed to the Motor City Comic Con to fulfill my teenage dream of meeting actors from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. I am a HUGE fan and was completely giddy meeting both J. August Richards (Gunn from Angel) and Nicholas Brendon (Xander from Buffy). They could not have been nicer and I got a little starstruck. Thank goodness Andrea was there to capture the moment!

I was on cloud nine for the rest of the day. This was such an AWESOME moment!

To end the weekend, we celebrated my dear friend Tracy’s bridal shower. She will make a beautiful bride and I am so honored to be part of her special day as a bridesmaid. The shower was so cute and wine-themed (who doesn’t like that?):

Happy Blogiversary!

Blogiversary I never thought this day would come and then it sort of snuck up on me. I hadn’t really thought much about my Blogiversary because I didn’t want to jinx anything. I start a lot of projects and have good intentions for all of them, but a lot of them never get finished. I didn’t want that to happen with this blog. Blogging was something I wanted to do for four years before I started Detroit Duchess and I wanted this project to be successful. Fast forward one year later and Detroit Duchess has gone beyond anything I could have imagined. I never thought anyone would even read this blog and in the past year I’ve had nearly 33,000 views! That is just unfathomable to me. So I wanted to say THANK YOU to all of you out there who are reading this. I feel so honored that you like the blog – your comments, likes and shares inspire me to keep this crazy blog going. For today’s post, I wanted to do a couple of things:

  • Take a look back on some of the past year’s highlights
  • Give you a preview of some of the new things to come
  • Announce my Blogiversary Giveaway

Year One Highlights

My first blog post: The City of Love The first post was definitely the hardest to write. It took me four years to get started, but once I did it was easy. This was our anniversary trip to Toledo and I can’t wait to write about our upcoming Toledo trip. Top Post: Grow Your Hair with Biotin I think this post is a Pinterest favorite and sort of evergreen so it gets a lot of views. I’m still using Biotin, which I highly recommend. First Link Party: June Pinspired So thankful to Shay at MixandMatchMama, Sheaffer at Pinterest Told Me To and Mel at The Larson Lingo for providing the opportunity to link up. First Partnership: Sip Happens Party Val from Chicken Scratch graciously reached out to me to participate in a fun event. I loved that she found me and this sort of developed on its own. I’m a celebrity: Weekend Recap: Wedding Fun So at the wedding this past weekend, one of our friends came up to us and asked if she was going to be on the blog and was so excited about it. This sort of blew me away. I knew people were reading it, but I guess I didn’t realize our friends were reading it. That sort of made it more real and inspired me to make the second year better than the first.

New Series

In the vein of making things bigger and better, I have a couple of new series that I want to introduce. Splurge vs. Steal I’ve sort of already been doing this with my looks for less, but I wanted to make it official and do more of it. Who says you need to be loaded to get that awesome bag or fabulous shoes? Throwback Thursday Posts If I would have started this blog when we got engaged, you could have followed along with all of our adventures. I want to take a look back and share some special moments with you like our engagement story, shower, wedding, honeymoon and lots of other fun stories. This won’t be every week, but once in a while. Beauty Tutorials I’ve been a little nervous to start doing videos, but I’ve also been saving some great tutorials that only a video will do justice to. I just need to pick a day and do it. There are a few other series that I hope to start, but we’ll see where life takes us.

Blogiversary Giveaway

To thank you for reading, I am planning to give away six weeks worth of prizes! Enter the giveaway below and each week I will choose another winner. Week 1 – May 23 The winner of Week 1 will receive Kate Middleton’s Zara Necklace, you can read my post about it here. ImageGen.ashx

Weekend Recap: Wedding Fun

I am terrible at taking pictures when John and I are out. I am always having fun and forget to capture it. So in order to give you a recap of the last few weekends I had to raid John’s phone and my friend’s Facebook pages. I think I am going to have to do one of those photo challenges to encourage myself to take more photos.

I mentioned in my previous Five on Friday: Bridesmaid Edition post that we had four weddings to attend this season. Here are some fun photos from the first one, where John and I were both in the wedding party:

Wenzel Wedding

Next up, John and I celebrated our third anniversary! With all of the weddings we decided to have a celebratory dinner at Iridescence at Motor City Casino. We are taking a trip over Memorial Day weekend for our annual anniversary trip, but we wanted to start the celebration early. John surprised me with a beautiful Michael Kors watch. I am a lucky lady!

Anniversary

The next day I attended my friend Krissy’s baby shower. She is the cutest prego and definitely has that pregnancy glow! Her sister put together a great shower and they made her an adorable flower for her bump:

Krissy's Shower

Our second wedding was this Saturday and it was at a great location! Planterra which is a cool greenhouse. It was the perfect time to get together with friends and for John and I to relax and have some fun. Of course I didn’t get any pictures of us, just of the girls. Also, a big shout out to Liz (on the right) who was so excited to be on my blog (I loved her green dress – Anne Klein). I was just excited that people are still reading this.

St John Wedding

Last but not least, we celebrated Mother’s Day on Sunday and I didn’t get any pictures of my Mom, because we were too busy playing with our niece. She is such a little cutie and our entertainment for the day!

Abby

So next up we have a shower, wedding, bachelorette party and final wedding. I can’t wait – it is a fun way to kick off the summer!
