Troy Restaurant Week

Ladies and Gentleman, it’s time for Troy Restaurant Week! This is one of my favorite times of year. My husband and I are foodies and love to go out to eat together with a good bottle of wine. I also like to enjoy the finer things in life and Troy Restaurant Week gives us the chance to do that without breaking the bank.

If you’ve never experienced Restaurant Week before here is the lowdown. A group of restaurants offers a fixed menu that you can try for a discounted price (usually $25-30 for a three course meal). This year’s Troy Restaurant Week runs from August 18th through August 23rd. You don’t have much time, so make sure to get your reservations in ASAP.

Here are the restaurants participating in this year’s Restaurant Week:

Are you excited for Troy Restaurant Week? What restaurants are you dying to check out?

Detroit Review: La Dolce Vita

A few weeks ago I took my Mom to La Dolce Vita in Detroit for brunch. I had been there once before with a girlfriend and loved it, so I thought it would be the perfect spot to take my Mom for her birthday celebration.

I love all things Italy, which is one of the reasons I love La Dolce Vita. For starters, it is a hidden gem in Detroit on 17546 Woodward. If you drove by the building on the street, you would have no idea it was there. It is only when you hit the gates that you can see its charm.

La Dolce Vita

La Dolce Vita

One of the best parts about La Dolce Vita is the brunch, which includes amazing food and unlimited mimosas! My mother loved the ambiance and we had a great time. This is one place that I would love to take my husband to on a weekend. It opens at 11 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, but the key is to get there early if you want to get a table outside.

I enjoyed the Quiche of the Day, which was rich and filling:

Since it was a birthday celebration, we splurged with a little dessert. I had the brownie, which also was made with peanut butter! It was so decadent and delicious!!

La Dolce Vita reminds me of being in Italy, when my husband and I were there I feel like every place we ate had that hidden gem feel. La Dolce Vita has such a relaxed atmosphere when you enter the gates, like time has stopped while you are there. I’m also a sucker for anyplace that has bottomless mimosas!

La Dolce Vita is a great place to bring out-of-town visitors or that special someone on a lazy weekend morning. For more information, check out their website here.

You can make a reservation at La Dolce Vita by calling (313)-865-0331 or through Open Table.

Have you been to La Dolce Vita? What did you think of it?

Wine of the Week – Vicente’s Sangria Growlers

This week’s wine comes to you from Vicente’s Cuban Cuisine in Detroit. Vicente’s is a fantastic restaurant on 1250 Library in Detroit. The first time I ate there was back in 2007 and I fell in love with their authentic mojito’s. More recently, I have discovered their delicious sangria!

vicente's

Sangria is a type of wine punch found in Spain, Portugal and Argentina. It is a blend of wine, fruit, sweetener and a touch of brandy. The sweetener can be honey, sugar, syrup or orange juice and you can pretty much use any kind of fruit you have to make it. Some people substitute Seltzer, Sprite or 7-Up for the brandy.

The last time I was at Vicente’s I discovered their Sangria. You can get red, white or a mix of both. I got the blend and it has a great cinnamon taste to it almost like an apple cider.

The great thing about Vicente’s sangria is that you can take it home with you in one of their custom growlers – they even provide you with the fruit! After you purchase your first growler you can bring it back and they will refill it for you.

Vicente's Sangria

I did this and brought it over to a friend’s house. It is easy and makes a great presentation. You could even pour it in your own container and it would look like you had made it.

I can’t wait to try out the white and red blends by themselves. This will definitely be my go to item to bring to summer parties.

Do you have any great wines that I should try? Let me know and if I like them I will feature them here.

Pewabic Pottery: A Detroit Treasure

I have had the pleasure and the privilege to be a part of Pewabic Pottery’s storied history. I was lucky enough to get my first public relations job there after college where I was the Special Events and Membership Coordinator. One of my responsibilities was to lead tours throughout the Pottery which is where I fell in love with the story of its founder and Detroit legacy.

For those of you that have never heard of Pewabic Pottery, here is a brief history, you can read a more detailed history here. Pewabic was founded in 1903 by Mary Chase Perry Stratton and her partner, Horace Caulkins. Mary started out doing china painting and teamed up with Horace Caulkins who invented the Revelation Kiln. Together they traveled the country doing china painting workshops and promoting the kiln.

They were very successful and this eventually led them to start Pewabic Pottery. They moved to the building on 10125 East Jefferson in 1907, which was designed by Mary’s husband, William Buck Stratton.

Throughout its history, Pewabic Pottery produced vessels, tiles and public and private installations throughout the country. Mary Stratton is most famous for her iridescent glazes.

You can see Pewabic installations throughout the United States at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, the Nebraska State Capitol building in Lincoln, the Science Building at Rice University in Houston, and the Herald Square installation commissioned by the New York Metro Transit Authority.

In Detroit, some of the more notable installations include the Scott Fountain on Belle Isle Park, Detroit People Mover Stations, McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metro Wayne County Airport (45,000 tiles), Comerica Park (325 tiles), Compuware headquarters and so many more.

In 1991, the building and its contents were designated a National Historic Landmark and today is Michigan’s only historic pottery.

I just love this story, how many women in the 1900’s went out on their own and started their own business? It’s such an inspiring story.

Every year I come back to visit Pewabic for the annual Garden Party fundraiser which this year showcased new Pewabic giftware, ceramic art from more than 80 artists, live music from Ben Sharkey, a live visual art performance by sculptor Mark Chatterly and hors d’oeuvres & cocktails.

I always have the best time visiting old friends and checking out all of the new items Pewabic has released. Here are some of my favorite pieces from this year’s Garden Party and some old favorites:

I was so excited to hear that Pewabic was finally able to create the old English “D” tile ($25). When I was a tour guide there, people always asked about it but Pewabic needed to get approval from Major League Baseball to use the image. This is going to be such a great seller. You can only purchase it at the Museum Store and it can only be direct-shipped within Tigers home broadcasting territory including Michigan and parts of northern Ohio and Indiana. I got two at the party and am sure I will get many more!

The new 12″x6″ Butterfly tile, designed by Glaze Technician Alex Thullen. Fresh from the kiln, ‘Butterfly’ designed by Glaze Technician Alex Thullen. I also saw this in a very cool black & white glaze. It won’t be available for online purchase until after the Garden Party, but I will update the post when it is.

The day after the annual Garden Party, the Belle Isle Conservancy  held a fundraiser at the Potter to restore the Pewabic tiles in the Scott Fountain. During the event, Pewabic released their new Sea Life tile with a portion of sales being donated to the Conservancy. As part of our Garden Party festivities in June, the is having their annual fundraiser to restore the Pewabic tiles in Scott Fountain.

This next piece has a special place in my heart because I witnessed this piece coming back to the Pottery when I worked there. The Iridescent Snowdrop vase returned to Pewabic after they bought it on Ebay in 2006. They purchased it from an antiques dealer in Montgomery, Alabama, who found it in a barn at an estate sale. I remember when the vase arrived at the Pottery and I got to witness the talented Sherlyn Hunter recreate it to be available in the museum store. This was an amazing process and it was such a cool experience. You can see the original in Pewabic’s Museum Collection. You can get it here in an iridescent glaze for $150.

Or here in a matte glaze for $75:

This is one of my favorites, the 4×4″ Botanical  Tree that was introduced in a series of tiles. You can get it in the matte glaze for $20, but I prefer the two-toned glaze which you have to get at the Pottery:

If you have never been to Pewabic I encourage you to attend one of their events. I could write hundreds of blog posts on different aspects of the Pottery, but it is really something you need to experience for yourself. If you love Pewabic as much as I do, consider becoming a member. You can get some great deals and access to special events.

Detroit Review: Santorini Estiatorio

During our honeymoon, my husband and I visited Greece and loved the laid back culture, wine and food. Whenever we visit Greektown it reminds of us that trip, which is why we love to get Greek food.

Greektown has been a staple of our Detroit after hours fun, whether it be on a date night or after a baseball game. This is why we were so excited to try out the newest Greek restaurant, Santorini Estiatorio. The restaurant replaced Mosaic in late 2012 and the hubby and I have already been there three times since it opened.

Santorini Estiatorio

We recently visited Santorini last Saturday with a group of friends and had a great time. Here are some of the great things about Santorini:

As you enter the restaurant you are transported to Greece with light blue colors everywhere and a rustic feel. The dining room is open, but there are great private booths around the edges. The atmosphere is mesmerizing; it made me feel like I was back in the Mediterranean.

entrance

This was the first time we went with a group, so we had some drinks at the bar to kill time. The bartender was great and let us sample some different Greek wines.

In my opinion the food is better than any of the other restaurants in Greektown. Everything they made was fresh, simple and had quality ingredients. On this trip we had the Saganaki, Lemon Chicken, JP’s Specialty Lamb Chops and Rice Pudding for dessert. Oh and lots and lots of wine  – because when in Greece…

The Saganaki was delicious! They have really good pita bread for dipping and use Greek kasseri cheese flambeed with brandy.

OPA!

I had the Lemon Chicken, sautéed in lemon and white wine which was perfect and very fresh. I was in heaven. It came with rice and peas which were very crisp. I hate mushy peas and these were delicious.

My husband ordered JP’s Specialty Lamb Chops, which were tender, perfectly cooked (you could really taste the grilled, smoky flavor) and seasoned to perfection.  The last time we went there he had them as a part of the Santorini Grill sampler and he had been talking about them ever since. He had a plan to get all five of those chops this time. I even tried some and liked them (I am very picky and my husband makes me try all kinds of things).

I ordered rice pudding for dessert, which is a favorite of mine. They served it warm and it was well worth the splurge!

I already started eating eat before John could take the pic! YUM!

Now that it’s warmer outside they had the front walls/windows open which really gave it an authentic feel (we ate outside pretty much the entire time we were in Europe and the Mediterranean).

I will definitely be visiting Santorini again in the future…OPA!

Santorini is located at 501 Monroe St. in Detroit. You can make a reservation by calling (313) 962-9366 or through Open Table (more on how much I love Open Table in a future post).

If you’ve visited Santorini Estiatorio, I would love to know what your experience was like.

I was not compensated for this review. All opinions expressed are my own.
