Combat Your Winter Skin with Meijer Beauty

Disclosure: I received sample products and a gift card from Meijer in exchange for this post. All opinions expressed are my own.

It’s winter here in Michigan and that brings along a multitude of skin problems, chapped lips, cracked heels, dry/chapped hands (from all the hand washing), scaly legs, need I go on? What’s a girl to do in these conditions?

Today, I’m going to share a few tips and products that will help keep your skin looking fresh and moisturized during the cold winter months. The biggest tip is to simply drink water. I talked about my water drinking struggles in this post and it is something I’m still working at. Even if you have the best moisturizer in the world, your body can’t maintain or absorb the moisture you give it through lotion if it is dehydrated. It’s like trying to fill up a cup with a hole in it. No matter how many times you fill it, the water will keep flowing out of the whole. So in order for any of the products that I’m going to share with you to work, you have to start out by hydrating yourself with good old H20.

drink water

Problem 1: Chapped Hands

Most of us wash our hands more during cold and flu season which contributes to dry and chapped hands. Being out in the cold weather without gloves amplifies this problem. One year, John came home with severely chapped hands, his knuckles were in bad shape from the cold weather because he refused to put on lotion. For him, I needed a one-time miracle treatment that could fix him up with one overnight application (because that’s all I was going to get). This CeraVe Healing Ointment is a great solution for this problem. From a preventative standpoint, always apply lotion to your hands after washing to help them stay soft and hydrated. Check out their website for a $2.00 coupon to bring in to your local Meijer.

Problem 2: Cracked Heels

As I’ve mentioned before, I have a problem drinking water and that is a key problem when you are trying to combat cracked heels. This year, they aren’t bad because I have upped my water intake, but I still go for bi-weekly pedicures to keep them in shape. In the interim, I need a solution to keep my heels in check. Enter the CeraVe Renewing SA Foot Cream. I like to rub it on my feet before bed and cover them in socks. That way, they can heal your heels while you sleep.

Problem 3: Eczema

Eczema can affect any of us at anytime. Some of us have it worse than others. While I’ve only had minor touches of eczema here and there, I know people who have been severely affected by it. This CeraVe Eczema Soothing Body Wash can help sooth what is commonly known as “winter itch.”

Problem 4: Scaly Skin

I was with a friend the other day and she was complaining about how her legs get so scaly in the winter. I’ve never had a problem with this and I think I know why. I shave my legs every day. I think that the constant exfoliation makes my skin more open to accepting the moisture I put on it after I shower. Now I know most women don’t do this so if you need help with scaly legs you might try Eucerin Original Healing Lotion. Make sure to slather it on after you shower to really lock in that moisture. On a side note, I am strikingly pale.

Beauty Favorites for a Long Day

This past week, I worked The North American Auto Show for one of my clients during the press and industry preview days. I also started teaching again the same week. This meant starting my work day at 5:30 a.m. and not getting home until after 10 p.m. I also took note of the models working the auto show and how they remained flawless in 4-inch stiletto heels which got me thinking about what the best beauty products are to keep you looking fresh after a long day. Here are a few of my favorites:

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray ($30)

If you could only choose one product to get you through a long day, this is it. Urban Decay’s All Nighter lasts for up to 16 hours and it actually lowers the temperature of your makeup to keep everything in place whether it’s hot, humid or cold.

setting spray

NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base ($25)

This eyeshadow base is essential to keep your eyeshadow from creasing. It is one of the best products I have ever used. It absolutely changes the way your shadow looks.

Nars Eye Primer

Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Deodorant ($25)

I first learned about this from Michelle Money, and love the smell of it. I’ve definitely noticed a difference using this on those hot summer days – it stays put and keeps you smelling fresh all day long.

Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Deodorant

Still Standing Spray ($27.99)

If you have a long day, like I did, most times you are standing on your feet…in heels. Still Standing is designed to last for 1.5 – 4 hours (yes you can reapply) and helps to relieve the pain you feel from wearing heels.

shopify_Still_Standing_box_w_minis_large

Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels ($30)

I first mentioned these here after I discovered them from Julie Benz. If you’ve had a crazy long day and have to get up and do it all over again, these eye gels are a must have!

Skyn Iceland

Always Clean Wipes-to-Go ($20)

This was another Michelle Money recommendation. I NEVER would have thought to try these on my own. These are great to keep in your purse to freshen up and not just for what you are thinking. You can use them anywhere. They have a nice scent and are perfect to throw in your purse on the go.

always

Sparkling Soda Shine Mist ($28)

One of my girlfriends swears by shine spray, but I hadn’t been able to find one that didn’t weigh down my super baby fine hair. This one is great and smells nice too. Bonus – it makes your hair pop in pictures.

Dior Fix it ($36)

I first learned about this from my one-on-one tutorial with Dior makeup artist Ricky Wilson. This stuff is amazing because you are priming and concealing at the same time. Plus it is so purse friendly. Ricky recommended making little x’s on your trouble spots and blending. You can also use this as a lip primer to make your color pop.

Fix it

Boscia Black Charcoal Blotting Linens ($10)

Blotting papers are a must for a long day, especially when you have oily skin like me. They are also infused with black bamboo charcoal to actively purify pores, because if I am working long hours I am probably stressed and prone to breakouts.

boscia

Dickinson’s Refreshingly Clean Cleansing Cloths

I know the last thing you want to do after a long day is take off your makeup, but I’ve been told multiple times that sleeping in your makeup is equivalent to seven days of aging! So just use a wipe and take care of your skin! Dickinson’s wipes are all natural so they are gentle on your face plus they have a convenient to-go pack.

Winter 2015 Favorites

It’s the first day of winter, which is fitting in Michigan because so far it has been unseasonally warm. I don’t expect it to last so as we prepare to bundle up for winter, here are a few of my favorite things to help you stay cozy!

FootNanny Chocolate Foot Cream ($48)

Endorsed by Oprah, this company has a cool story, but I am always on the lookout for a good foot cream and who doesn’t love chocolate.

Footnanny chocolate

Laredo Over-the-Knee Wedge Boot ($40)

These are definitely on my wish list, but I can’t decide between the black or taupe color.

Laredo

CND Vinylux in Peacock Plume ($6.19)

I love this color, it is so fun to get you through the drab winter weather.

Peacock Plume

Kate Spade Somerset Cardigan ($198)

I need a new black cardigan so I can still wear all my sleeveless summer dresses in the winter with tights. I love the bow detail on this one from Kate Spade.

Kate Spade Somerset

Martha Stewart Collection Luxury Flannel Sheet Sets ($88.99 for King)

You can’t go wrong with flannel sheets in the winter. I love that they have these in our colors and cannot wait to get cozy this winter!

Martha Stewart Flannel Sheets

Wake-Up Light ($99.99)

I’ve heard of these before, but have never seen one in action. As Sport and I get up early every morning to walk, this would be great to help me start my day. This video is pretty much my morning, haha! I can’t find an embeddable video, but make sure to watch it on Amazon, so funny!

wake up light

Kate Spade Embellished Wool Sweater ($298)

I know this is pricey, but it really caught my eye and I just love it! A great reason to use up those Nordstrom notes!

kate spade embellished sweater

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Steamer Solutions ($139)

This is amazing and the perfect solution to the dry winter weather! I would LOVE to be able give myself a full facial at home. The price isn’t bad either for what you get.

steamer

Mixed Media Sweater Dress ($89.50)

I got this dress on Black Friday and love it! I received a ton of compliments on the first wear.

Mixed Media Dress

Long Leather Gloves ($198)

I wanted these last year when they were part of The Limited’s Scandal Collection. These are a little pricey, but they are 50% off right now, so get them quickly!

Unlock the Best Kept Beauty Secret

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Single Edition Media on behalf of Dickinson’s. All opinions expressed are my own.

I was recently contacted by Dickinson’s to talk about their original Witch Hazel beauty products. Before I received the products to try, I mentioned that I was doing this post to a friend and she RAVED about Dickinson’s. I hadn’t heard such a positive beauty review of any product in a long time. She loved the cleansing cloths so much that she keeps them in her purse and hands them out to friends. I thought, if she had that positive of a review then it was high time I tried them for myself.

DICKINSONWITCHHAZELlogo

I started using the Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel Daily Refreshingly Clean Cleansing Cloths at night to take off my makeup before bed.

Dickinsons

I’ve had great results so far and they are SO quick and easy to use when you are falling asleep on the couch and don’t want to take the time to wash your face. I have sensitive skin and Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel is gentle enough to use daily to help remove excess dirt, oil and makeup because it doesn’t strip my skin of its essential moisture. It also works as a toner to help minimize the appearance of pores, eliminate oil & shine and nourish flaky, dull skin.

Dickinson’s has been around since 1866 and they have a few beauty tricks up their sleeve. I feel like I’ve heard people rave about Witch Hazel forever and Dickinson’s helped me get to the bottom of what it is and why it is so great for your skin. For those of you that don’t know, Witch Hazel is a flower that was discovered 2,000 years ago by Native Americans. Here are some other cool facts about Witch Hazel:

Witchhazel

  • Witch Hazel is indigenous to the woodland areas of the Northeastern United States
  • Native Americans used it as a topical healing solution as early as the 16th century
  • The twigs and bark of the Witch Hazel plant contain therapeutic constituents that when extracted and distilled create a clear, fragrant, natural astringent
  • Witch Hazel is also known as winterbloom, snapping hazel and spotted alder
  • Witch Hazel flowers bloom for five weeks and open and close to protect their petals

I have super oily skin,  but also very sensitive skin, which makes finding a product that both cleans and doesn’t dry out my skin a real problem. I loved using the Witch Hazel Cleansing Cloths because they cleaned my face and kept it from getting greasy again. I learned some other fun facts about how Witch Hazel affects the skin:

  • The female face has an average of 20,000 pores – Dickinson’s Witch Hazel will help minimize their appearance
  • You can use Dickinson’s Witch Hazel to clean your makeup brushes (72% of women don’t do this)
  • Women begin to experience dry skin at age 40-Dickinson’s helps nourish skin without removing moisture
  • Dickinson’s Witch Hazel has no soaps, fragrances or dyes
  • Dickinson’s is 100% natural
  • You can use Dickinson’s as an eye treatment by soaking a cotton round and applying to eyes
  • Estheticians recommend Dickinson’s to soothe skin after hair removal
  • Dickinson’s is eco-friendly

I also loved using the Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel On-The-Go Refreshingly Clean Towelettes. These were great to keep in my purse or for on the go. I may have mentioned that I walk Sport every morning before work. Before I leave I make sure to clean my face with the Dickinson’s Towlettes and they are awesome.

Dickinsons2

I think one of the best parts about Dickinson’s is that everything is American made. This amazing beauty secret is grown and harvested in the United States. I don’t know how many products you can say are all-natural these days.

Have you tried Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel before? I would love to hear your feedback.

Make sure to follow Dickinson’s on InstagramFacebook and Twitter for a special offer coming soon. You can find Dickinson’s products at Walgreens, Duane Reade, select Walmart and other fine retail stores.

Five on Friday: Wine for Your Face

I love my Wine of the Week features, but today I wanted to talk to you about wine for your face…wine beauty products that is! Here are some cool wine beauty products that you can use while drinking wine:

Tony Moly Red Wine Face Mask ($4)

These face masks are really fun and easy to use. Tony Moly has a whole line of different ingredients to try, but the Wine version caught my eye. There are two in a package and you just keep it on your face for 20 minutes. This particular mask is infused with real red wine extracts and rosemary to address enlarged pores while purifying, refining, and tightening skin.

tony moly mask

Coco Cabernet Custom Vinotherapy Mask ($46)

This custom face mask has both wine and chocolate to make it a decadent treat! It comes dry and then you mix it up before you use it.

grapeseed co

Wine Blot Lip Balm ($10)

29 by Lydia Mondavi is aligned with the famous Mondavi name and you can buy the whole line at Target. I thought this lip balm was perfect for the coming colder season. Apparently grape seed extract is 50 times more powerful than Vitamin E when it comes to protecting your skin, so this gives you a lot of bang for your buck.

wine blot lip balm

Italian Red Grape Shampoo ($8.99)

This one isn’t for your face, but close enough. The ingredients include red grapes native to Italy, organic grape extract, resveratrol and red wine extract. These antioxidants act as UV filters to help correct sun damage. Sugar and coconut oil cleansers remove everyday pollutants and organic kelp and nettle extracts add iron, calcium, potassium and other vitamins and miners to help strengthen each strand of hair. They also have a conditioner too!

Red Wine Resveratrol Nourishing Cream ($45)

This cream protects against signs of aging such as environmental damage, lines, wrinkles and loss of elasticity.

Fall Beauty Finds at Meijer

Disclosure: I received beauty products from Meijer to help promote the Meijer Beauty Department. All opinions expressed are my own.

I was thrilled to receive a treasure trove of fall beauty items from Meijer for this post. Even as an adult, fall means a new year and new beauty products. Meijer is a great place to shop to refresh your collection as they have everything from styling products to beauty products all in the Meijer beauty aisle. There were a few things in particular that stood out to me (and I couldn’t believe you could get them at Meijer, how convenient!) and I even tried a new look to share with you.

The first item that caught my interest was the Simple Cleansing Micellar Water. I was thrilled to receive this since I had just discovered Miceller Water (you can read about it in my previous post here).

Meijer fall4

The next items I was stoked to receive were the Garnier Fructis Full & Plush Shampoo & Conditioner. I have baby fine and super thin hair so this was right up my alley.

Meijer fall3

I have been living on fragrance samples for a while so this full size Versace Bright Crystal Eau de Toilette was perfect. I love that Candice Swanepoel is the face of this scent in their new ad:

Versace describes it as “an enthralling and voluptuous fragrance, for the Versace woman who is strong and confident yet feminine, sensual, who loves to be enveloped in a fragrance that tastes of juicy pomegranate grains, iced freshness and shining yuzu.” Let’s just say that this is perfect for me!

Meijer fall7

I also got some fun cosmetics including some amazing new palettes!

Meijer fall

I used the Revlon Colorstay palette in 528 Passionate to create this look below.

Meijer fall9

Revlon guarantees that this eyeshadow won’t crease, fade or smudge for 16 hours. I wore this look at work and it stayed all day. I watered down my eyeliner brush and used the dark color for eyeliner to really make my eyes pop.

I also used the Loreal Lumi highlighter in Ice on the high points of my face. If you’ve never used highlighter before, they have a handy diagram on the back of the bottle to help you.

What is Micellar Water?

I recently heard about a product called micellar water. This is surprising because it’s not often that I come across a beauty product that I’ve never heard of before.

micellar water

Micellar water has been around for more than one hundred years, first gaining popularity in France, where it was used to help deal with the region’s harsh water supply. Micellar water is made up of micelles, which are tiny balls of cleansing oils that are attracted to dirt and makeup.

When you combine them with a cotton ball they act like a magnet to attract dirt and makeup from your face. It requires no rinsing so it replaces your nighttime routine of taking off your makeup. Cotton is hyrdophilic which means ‘water-loving’  and means that it will absorb oil and dirt. Micellar water draws out impurities in your skin without stripping it or drying it out so it is a win-win cleaning and hydrating at the same time.

I’ve been using micellar water myself for the last month and have loved the results on my skin! This will take off all of your mascara and hard to remove makeup. Here are some of my recommendations and ones that I want to try.

I do have to start this off by talking about my experience with Caudalie’s Micellar Cleansing Water ($28). This was recommended to me and I had a bad reaction to it. I have since discovered that some people have a negative reaction to the grapeseed oil in this product. Some people loved this, but if you have sensitive skin like I do just be careful about products with grapeseed oil.

caudaliewater

After my mishap, I started using Sephora’s Triple Action Cleansing Water ($12) which I LOVE! This product takes off all of my makeup and makes my skin feel refreshed before bed. I highly recommend this to anyone.

sephora cleansing water

The gold standard in micellar waters seems to be Bioderma ($26.89). I read something that said that many models use this backstage because with so many makeup changes their skin would be raw without it.

biodermaThere’s been a lot of buzz around Simple’s Cleansing Micellar Water ($6.99). It adds vitamins B3 and C for a extra punch plus it’s easy to find at any local drugstore.

simple

La Roche-Posay Physiological Micellar Solution ($18.49) is a French solution that has an added antioxident called Selenium which helps your skin fight free radicals.

La-Roche-Posay-Physiological-Micellar-SolutionIf you like a higher end product Gucci has a Purifying Cleansing Water ($49) that has a really nice dispenser.

The Dior Instant Cleansing Water ($38) includes pure lily extract to give you an extra glow.

Lancôme Eau Fraiche Douceur Micellar Cleansing Water ($38) includes a soothing Rose de France.
