A Royal Wedding Recap

Raise your hand if you still aren’t over the Royal Wedding! I’ve been obsessed with all things Meghan Markle and the Royal Wedding for months now, culminating in a fabulous viewing party on the actual day. I picked up a peonies (Meghan’s favorite flower) along with some white roses, lilies and myrtle (a tradition in every Royal Wedding bouquet), lemon and elderflower macarons (same flavor as the wedding cake) from Le Detroit Macaron, and my bingo card from The Royal Wedding Pod.

With my current obsession in mind, when I saw that Susan E. Kelley of What Kate Wore and What Meghan Wore was hosting a Royal Wedding Garden Party right here in Michigan, I immediately locked down my ticket and recruited my friend Carolyn to be my date. This was the invitation:

Join us for a Royal Wedding Garden Party at Cornman Farms in Dexter, Michigan on June 10th! Susan E. Kelley of What Kate Wore and What Meghan Wore, and author and journalist Micheline Maynard are joining us to host a fête worthy of the Queen. The afternoon begins with cocktails in the garden, followed by a proper Afternoon Tea prepared by Cornman Farms’ British owner and chef Kieron Hales. While enjoying scones, sweets and savory tea sandwiches you will also have the pleasure of re-living the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Our co-hosts, Susan and Micheline, will review royal history and fashion as it pertains to the wedding of the year.

If that wasn’t enough to fuel my obsession, one of my clients is currently in England and she crossed paths with the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex on their way to Buckingham Palace for the Trooping of the Colour and sent me this picture! I can’t believe how close she got to them!

Needless to say, I was beyond excited for this event. When we arrived at Cornman Farms they had set the scene perfectly.

I wore one of my recent new purchases, a Tiered-Bell-Sleeve Dress from Calvin Klein, but I wish I would have had time to get a fascinator. I would probably go with something like this Pale Baby Blue Teardrop Sinamay Fascinator with Feathers. I was also thrilled to meet Susan E. Kelley, the guru behind What Kate Wore and What Meghan Wore. I’ve been following Kate Middleton’s (the Duchess of Cambridge) style for years and Susan has kept us up to date every step of the way. I was thrilled to discover that Susan is from Michigan! I never would have guessed!

We had a beautiful table laid out for us for the presentation and a beautiful floral arch around the presentation screen courtesy of Detroit Design.

Kieron Hales, the chef and owner, is originally from Britain and his family worked at The Daily Mail. While we enjoyed the presentation he passed around some keepsake papers with historic headlines. I had to snap a picture of this one, because it’s wild how far the royal family has come.

It was a lovely event and I sincerely hope they do more in the future…maybe a viewing/recap for Princess Eugenie’s wedding this fall. Now, how to pass the time until the next royal event or the next season of The Crown? I would love to hear your suggestions.

Bachelorette 14 – Becca Kufrin

Becca went through a lot during Arie’s season of The Bachelor and it can’t be fun to see your former fiance gallivanting all over the world with the girl he dumped you for and proposed to quickly after. But in true ABC fashion, she’s going to try her hand at televised love. Don’t get me wrong, I love this show and I especially love when it works out but I think I would be in a “to hell with you all” sort of mood after the televised breakup. But the money could be anywhere from $30,000 to $200,000 and I’m guessing it’s closer to the latter, especially if she knew how to negotiate. Full steam ahead people, Becca’s official promo clip and pictures are here…and she’s ready to “do the damn thing.”

The song in her promo is Kesha’s Woman, which I have since downloaded and am obsessed with. The unedited version is much better than the one they use in the promo.

Becca wore a Tom Ford One-Shoulder Side-Slit Fitted Evening Gown ($5,990), paired with Massimo Matteo Open Toe Unicorn Heels ($49.50), Dana Kemp earrings and spiral diamond ring and a Suzanne Kalan spiral ring. To recreate her look, I found this Christina Wu One Shoulder Sequin Bridesmaid Gown, which comes in rose gold, for $197.99 and this Pandora ROSE Entwined Ring ($17.50). Her shoes are affordable and still available!

Bachelorette Makeup Artist, Gina Modica posted all of her tips for getting Becca’s look for this shot:

They include one of my favorites! Temptu’s Silksphere Airpod Foundation in rose beige ($45)

As a highlighter she used Armani’s Beauty Fluide Embelliseur #11 ($62)

Kat Von D’s Sacred Heart and Crucifix from the Saint and Sinner Palatte ($148.97)

Her cheeks are flushed with the very popular Nars’ Orgasm Blush ($30):

MAC Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Staunchly Stylish ($17.85):

Charlotte Tilbury Lip Lustre Lip Gloss in Blondie ($22):

Amazing Concealer ($28):

The Balm Cosmetics Furrowcious ($13):

ABC took some additional promo shots like this one which is more casual:

In this picture, Becca wears the Madewell Whisper Cotton V-Neck Pocket Tee ($19.50), Hudson Collin Skinny Jeans ($210) and the Shoedazzle Donatella Buckle Strap Pumps ($62.95):

I found these great Express Slingback Pumps ($41.94) that are a great dupe for the Donatella pumps which are only available in silver now.

Are you ready to join Becca on her journey for love? (See I could be Chris Harrison) You never know, this could be the most “dramatic” season ever!

Join Me at the I Feel Pretty Screening!

Disclosure: I received complimentary passes to the screening in exchange for this post. Scroll down for your chance to win tickets to the screening.

When I saw the preview for this movie I was pumped to see one of my favorites, Busy Phillips, in a supporting role! If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you know that I LOVED her in CougarTown. As soon as I was invited, I texted my friends and booked their calendars for a fun screening. One of my friends loves Amy Schumer, so I knew it would be the perfect girl’s night out.

I Feel Pretty is a hilarious and relatable comedy about an ordinary woman, Renee (Amy Schumer), who struggles with feelings of insecurity and inadequacy about herself both outwardly and inwardly. After suffering a fall, she wakes up believing that her physical appearance has changed to what she believes is the perfect version of herself, but unbeknownst to her, she looks exactly the same. With this new found “beauty,” suddenly she is confident, empowered, and fearless. She marches through life with an altered perception of her physical self and a staunch self-assuredness that leads her to comedic interactions with the other people in her life. On the outside, Renee has not changed at all, but her perception of herself has.

*

I Feel Pretty is a genuine, heartfelt, emotional comedy that anyone who has ever felt a little unsure and a little un-pretty can relate too. You laugh with Renee, you root for her, and you wonder what will happen when she realizes that her appearance never changed after all. The cast is rounded out superbly with Academy Award® Winner, Michelle Williams, Aidy Bryant, Busy Phillips, Naomi Campbell, and Emily Ratajkowski.

Enter here for your chance to win a pair of passes to the advance screening of I Feel Pretty on Wednesday, April 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Emagine Royal Oak. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY.

If I have time before the screening, I would channel Amy and get a pair of yellow pumps, like these Steve Madden Orkin Pumps ($69.99):

If you miss the screening, you can still catch I Feel Pretty in theaters on Friday, April 20th. What do you think of the trailer?

Introducing Skyler Ray

I’ve been a little busy lately and not blogging as much because I’ve been obsessed with my new niece, Skyler Ray! You may have seen a few photos on Instagram, but I haven’t had a chance to introduce her on the blog yet. Today I’m sharing some photos and favorite things for any new auntie! This little girl has stolen my heart!

Introducing Skyler Ray!

I was so excited for baby Skyler that I made this crazy unicorn diaper cake for the baby shower. We’ve had a lot of fun using all the diapers. You can get these rose blossom diapers from The Honest Company.

All of my friends highly recommended a mamaRoo, which is what I brought for the shower. So far, it’s turned out to be great!

Auntie Family Tee ($5.97)

They used to have this in a onesie which I bought for her but now that she’s outgrown it I need to buy multiple versions of this shirt.

She was so little in this onesie! I need to get her the shirt now! You can see she’s sort of smiling for me.

Baby’s First Halloween

Aunties are here to buy all the disposable clothing! I took advantage of all the Babies R’Us going out of business sales to get her very first Halloween onesie! They don’t have my original one, but I found this updated one from The Children’s Place for 2018 in case you have a little one on the way.

Baby’s First Valentine’s Day Outfit ($9.99)

I love all these firsts! In a note to my future self, buying all these “first” outfits would be a great baby shower gift.

I am totally in love with my sweet little niece and would love to hear your favorite recommendations for the first year (and anything Auntie related) in the comments.

Wine of the Week: Sexual Chocolate

“It’s not getting routine; it just keeps getting better.” This is the tagline for Sexual Chocolate from SLO Down Wines. This is a fantastic red blend of mostly Syrah and Malbec that is the perfect drinking wine. It is smooth and fruity with a hint of chocolate. As you can see from SLO Down Wines’ promotional video, this wine doesn’t take itself to seriously.

I stumbled upon this one a few different times with friends and then it became one of my go to favorites. It doesn’t hurt that they sell it at the store in my office building so it’s easy to pick up on the way home. At $24.99 a bottle, it is the perfect wine to bring to a party or share with friends, not to mention it is delicious.

In 2008, Brandon Allen started SLO Down wines with 93 cases of Sexual Chocolate, which he named after his love of Mad Libs. (There’s a thought for my next wine night!). The label looks like it was written with a No. 2 pencil, but it speaks to how the wine was founded – by two people not taking themselves to seriously. According to the founders, it pairs well with Wednesday nights and pizza.

As I was checking out SLO Down Wines’ website I noticed that they have an amazing wine club! I might have to sign up because you get two bottles of Sexual Chocolate along with two other wines four times a year! They’ve also added Stand Out, a red blend, and Broken Dreams Chardonnay to their lineup.

Have you tried Sexual Chocolate yet? I highly recommend it for your next girl’s night in.

Take a Trip Around the Sun with Kenny Chesney

Disclosure: I received complimentary tickets to this concert in exchange for this post.

Summer is almost here and it’s time to plan out summer concerts! One of the biggest summer concerts this year is Kenny Chesney at Ford Field on August 4. If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, you can find them at www.ticketmaster.com. This is right before my husband’s birthday and he loves country, so it’s the perfect concert for us. If you don’t know, Kenny’s fan club is called No Shoes Nation, and he recently put together a special album for the fan club. You can see all the tracks, here.

For this concert, Kenny will play all the new songs from The Big Revival and Cosmic Hallelujah and throw in many of the favorites from No Shoes Nation. Joining him for this year’s trip around the sun will be Academy of Country Music Male Vocalist and Country Music Association and ACM Single of the Year winner Thomas Rhett (“Die a Happy Man,” “It Goes Like This,” “Craving You (feat. Maren Morris)”), good time band Old Dominion (“Break Up with Him,” “Song for Another Time”) and newcomer Brandon Lay.

If you want to get your pre-party on, Ford Field is hosting a Beach Bash from 1-4 p.m. before the show on Brush St. and part of Adams St. 93.1 NASH FM and 99.5 WYCD are providing live entertainment and the event is free and open to the public. If you don’t have tickets, you can still attend the Beach Bash and have some country fun.

I’m still loving “Come Over,” it definitely reminds me of my love story.

According to Kenny, “There’s nothing like a stadium full of people coming together to remind you what life’s about. The energy, the moments, the fun. Every single one of these artists who’re coming out with us for Trip Around the Sun live their lives the exact same way: they work hard, they appreciate what they’re given and they love music every bit as much as they love life. I, personally, can’t wait to see this show hit the road.”

If this is going to be a fun date night with my husband, I definitely need to go a little country. Country is all about that girl next door vibe, so you have to think effortless, simple but cute without trying too hard. I was looking for a sundress to wear that was maybe white with eyelets, and this Gianni Bini Lila Tiered Eyelet Lace Dress is perfect. Plus it is early enough to wait for it to got on sale.

Since this one is indoors at Ford Field you don’t have to worry about it getting too hot and can rock those cowboy boots for the perfect country look! I liked these Dingo Marlee Women’s Slouch Boots with the gold toe! This would be the perfect item to use all that Kohl’s cash on.

Ford Field’s bag policy will allow you to have a clutch with a strap or a crossbody bag with a strap. My Coach Messenger Bag is always my go to for concerts or sporting events and I just saw this adorable new version, the Coach Camo Rose Floral Cross-Body Bag, plus it’s on sale!

What are your favorite country concert looks? I hope to see you at Ford Field on August 4!

Meghan Markle and Madewell

I am obsessed with all thing Meghan Markle of late and cannot wait for the Royal Wedding. Her style is so effortless chic and she always looks put together. One of her favorite brands pre-Harry is Madewell. Many of their pieces have been featured throughout her now defunct Instagram account and I thought I would share a few of her favorites here and maybe try to find some lookalikes.

Madewell x Biltmore® Panama Hat ($58)

I have been dying to get a fedora like this and Meghan makes it look so good. Since her Madewell version is sold out, you can try this Cuyana Panama Hat made in Ecuador for $85:

UPDATE! The original Madewell Biltmore hat is back in stock here! Due to demand it takes a while to get them, mine was backordered and it should be here any day.

Madewell Crisscross Sightseer Sandals (sold out)

Meghan highlighted these sandals in an Instagram post from July 2015 (does anyone else miss her IG?). The original sandals are sold out, but it looks like Madewell has put out an updated version with these Boardwalk Quarter Strap Sandals ($59.50).

Madewell Jean Jacket in Pinter Wash ($118)

Here is one piece that is actually still available! Meghan wore this out in Toronto last April and you can get it in pretty much any size!

Madewell Arielle D’orsay Flats (sold out)

Meghan took this photo when she collaborated with Birchbox on her blog, The Tig. She is also wearing her panama hat here. How sweet is little Guy there? I found these Sam Edelman Olive D’Orsay Flats ($100) which are a perfect match.

Madewell CityGuide Scarf (sold out)

Meghan first shared the Madewelll CityGuide Scarf on her blog, The Tig, in a travel essentials post. It has since sold out, but I found some really cool ones on RedBubble, especially this Detroit one for $26.

Do you have any great Madewell finds? Meghan has definitely peaked my interest in this brand.

Find Your Perfect Wine at Vinotecca Birmingham

I was invited to the opening event by Vinotecca. All opinions are my own.

I was disappointed when Vinotecca announced that it was closing in Royal Oak to make way for the new Jolly Pumpkin. I’ve had a lot of fun attending their Black Wine Night over the years. But my frown was quickly turned upside down when it was announced that Vinotecca would be moving to Birmingham instead.

One fun element about Vinotecca is the owners are a father-daughter team (my dad and I are obviously doing the wrong types of bonding activities). John Jonna has 40 years of experience in the wine business and is a sommelier and cheese expert (who knew this was a thing?). His daughter, Kristin, is a certified specialist of wine. I had no idea that John founded Merchant’s Fine Wine (one of my favorite places when I lived in the Dearborn area).

When I RSVP’d for the opening event, I had no idea I would get the wine education I did. My friend and I decided to cozy on up to the bar and we ended up getting a personal wine education from John himself. He shared some of his favorite wines with us and the best part was that for every wine he poured us he had a story to go along with it either about the wine or how he first discovered it. If you are an expert or a novice you will definitely learn something at Vinotecca. Here are a few of the wines John selected for us and some interesting details about them.

Don & Sons 2015 Pinot Noir

This winery is now in its fourth generation and the family has definitely got the hang of it if their namesake wine is any indication. It’s based in Sonoma and the grapes are sourced from the Coast and the Petaluma Gap and Russian River Valley. This is a varietal so it is 94% Pinot Noir blended with Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvingon and Zinfandel which makes it great for everyday drinking. This is also a good one to serve to newbies or if you are having guests over and aren’t sure what they will like.

Stephanie Aviron 2015 Chenas

Now here is where I really learned something. John gave us a brief history of what a Beaujolais wine is and why they are so interesting. I had never heard of Beaujolais, so this was a treat for me. This wine is made from the Gamay Grape and gets its name from the Province of Beaujolais in France. They use a different technique in the winemaking process called semi-carbonic maceration. They put the whole grape into a stainless steel tank to ferment and the bottom grapes get crushed and essentially the carbon dioxide they create starts to saturate the grapes that didn’t get crushed and makes them ferment. There are all different types of Beaujolais wines and the different strains/versions are called crus (like crews). From what John told us finding a good Beaujolais is something of a treasure hunt and people spend years trying to find one that speaks to them. This wine did that for him and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Chateau d’Orignac Pineau Des Charentes

This was another gem, something I had never heard of before which isn’t surprising as the Pineau isn’t very well known outside of France. It even has a legend surrounding it! Apparently in 1589, a winemaker accidentally added grape must into what he thought was an empty barrel, but it was full of eau de vie (or a fruit brandy. They put the barrel in the cellar to ferment and when they brought it out a few years later they had made a Pineau! It contains 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon with about one-third Cognac. You serve it chilled and is wonderful with desserts and cheese. It should be as it takes nearly 10 years to make!

2014 Triton Tinta de Toro

This Tempranillo was made in Spain and John had visited this vineyard and had a lot of fun stories to tell around this wine. During the Middle Ages, Toro was Spain’s most famous winemaking region and these wines accompanied Spanish explorers to the New World. This is a hearty red wine with an elegant finish. The wine is named Triton after Neptune and his son from Roman Mythology. They were the gods of rivers and lakes and the river Duero plays an important part in the creation of this wine.

I had a lovely time at Vinotecca and guarantee you that I will be back again. I’m always looking for a good wine bar, and Vinotecca gives you wine and a little education to go with it.

Start Your Story with Trollbeads

Disclosure: I received sample products from Trollbeads in exchange for this post. All opinions expressed are my own.

Last month, I had the unique pleasure of attending a special event at the Trollbeads store, where I got to meet some of the Trollbeads artisans and learn how they make the beads. I left with an appreciation of just how unique each bead is. In case you were wondering, they call the creation of a bead and the glass work they do “lamping” or “lampwork.” Ana Pagan was our dedicated artist and she let me take a short video to watch one of her creations.

I even got to make my own bead with her help! I think it turned out beautifully and it gave me much more of an appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into each of these beads.

One of the cool things about this event, is that I got to meet a lot of other Trollbeads “collectors.” Being new to Trollbeads, I didn’t know very much about all the fun collections and limited edition beads that are offered by Trollbeads. Collectors come out to these events to stock up on the newest beads and continuously add to their stash. It was so fun to see some of the creations they made. Most of them brought a bag of goodies with them so I could see some of their favorite beads that they were looking to match for.

There were two limited edition pieces (that are still available) when I visited the store. The first was the Shimmer Royal bead ($55). This was the official “Black Friday” bead and I ended up purchasing this one for myself because it was so beautiful.

I also saw this picture on their website and I LOVE how they styled it with the gold. I wouldn’t have thought about that. Now I can recreate it for myself!

The other limited edition piece was the Wishful Sky Bracelet ($109) for the holidays. This was a great deal, because you get a bracelet, clasp, spacer and bead for a great price. If you haven’t started your Trollbeads collection yet, this is the perfect way to jump in. Once you get the bracelet you can really mix and match.

Here you can see a little behind the scenes of the making of the Wishful Sky bracelet:

Some of the other fun pieces that caught my eye were the Stackable Jewelry Case ($24), which would be perfect to store beads and swap them out for different designs or for traveling.

I paired the Delicate Pearl Ring ($65) and the Snow Bubble Ring ($65) for this fun look:

I also FELL IN LOVE with this adorable Elephant Bead ($35). It’s definitely next on my list:

If you’re interested in starting your Trollbeads collection, visit the store at Twelve Oaks Mall and mention DetroitDuchess for 10% off your order. Make sure to post a picture of what you get! If you are a Trollbeads “collector” or fan, I would love to hear how you got started.
