Santa Brought Us a House!

Santa visited us a little early this year when we closed on our new house! We are thrilled and can’t wait to move in!

sold

After we closed, John and I went over to the new place for some champagne and toasted with our wedding flutes. We are so excited for the next step in our journey!

toast

I wanted to share a few pictures of our new place. These are the photos from the listing, so don’t get too attached to the furniture or the colors – consider these the before pictures.

When we were looking at houses, I kept referring to this one as the Christmas tree house. I love the tree in front of the house and can’t wait to decorate it next year.

New Home

This is the entryway – we are thrilled to finally be getting a coat closet!

entryway

The kitchen is amazing! So much counter and cabinet space. Plus this island is awesome! The homeowners left the chairs, so that is one less thing we have to get.

I finally get a dining room! This is a little too red for us so we are going to take it down a notch with the paint.

dining room

dining room2

The living room is big and has a lot of natural light. The previous owners had a thing for accent walls, so you will see a bunch of them throughout the house. We are going to repaint this room too.

This is the master bedroom and the only room where we are going to keep the accent wall. I can’t wait to finally get a king bed!

master bedroom 2

You can’t see this part, but we already took down the shower doors in the master bath. Next up – repaint this because that mustard yellow is not for me!

This will be the guest bedroom.

This room will be the future nursery, but until then it will be a staging room/office. I don’t have a good picture of the basement to share. It is unfinished, so we will eventually finish it and then it will be the man cave/office, etc.

This is the second upstairs bathroom.

And this is the power room/half bath.

So we have been working hard to get things ready to move in and starting to bring some stuff over before our official move date. At this point we just can’t wait to be living there!

Winter 2014 Favorites

Winter is officially here and it’s my job to make sure you are prepared to bundle up and enjoy it with some of my favorite things. After last year’s Polar Vortex I am hoping for a milder winter this time around. But if not, I am prepared to hibernate. Without further adieu, here are my favorite things for winter:

Laura Mercier Creme de Pistache Souffle Body Creme ($60)

Laura Mercier has a whole line of pistachio flavored body treatments and creme. This stuff smells SO good. I can’t wait to stock up on the body creme for the season.

Pistachio

Bamboo Chic Drape Front Cardigan ($90)

Many of my favorite bloggers have raved about this cardigan a.k.a. the blardigan and it would be the perfect way to stay cozy during winter.

blardigan

OPI Thank Glogg It’s Friday

This color is from the new Nordic Collection. I would get the regular color as well as the gel. I did like the My Voice is a Little Norse sparkle color for a little extra on the ring finger or all of the nails for an extra bling.

Thank Glogg its Friday

Helan Women’s Faux Fox Fur Shawl Cloak Cape Coat ($38.74)

I got a luxurious looking fur trimmed cape at a small local boutique. I can’t tell you how many complements I’ve already received on it and it was only $80! Can’t beat that! It looks so much more expensive than it is. Unfortunately, it isn’t available online, but I did the next best thing and found a similar look for less which looks just like mine:

fur cape

Wen Winter White Citrus ($32.82)

I can’t wait to try the newest Wen scent, especially since I just finished my fall trio. You can also try the Winter Cranberry Mint and the Winter Vanilla Mint. Check out my original post on the benefits of Wen.

hp_WEN_SEO_11262014

Cable Knit Arm Warmers ($16.50)

I could use these as I am writing this post – I can’t feel my fingers at the moment.

arm warmers

Vanilla Bean Noel Candle ($12)

John usually doesn’t like candles, but even he commented on how good it made the house smell.

pBBW1-19562734v275

Verilux Happylight 5000 Energy Lamp ($44.98)

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is especially prevalent here in the cold Michigan weather. I thought I would try to combat it this year with 30 minutes under this special energy lamp. You can bring it to work or keep it at home, but I think this would be great for both John and I to keep our energy up this winter.

VT05-SilRight_standard

Ombre Faux Fur Vest ($69.97)

This is so much fun for winter. I need to get this and hang out in a winter resort destination.

faux fur ombre vest

MNG by Mango® Long-Sleeve Mon Chéri Sweatshirt ($39.99)

If you haven’t noticed a theme yet, it is cold in Michigan and I need to stay warm. I’ve been meaning to add a graphic sweatshirt to my wardrobe and this is just the cutest thing!

mon cheri

UGG Classic Short Sparkle Boots ($190)

I never used to like UGGs and then I got some knock off UGGs and loved them – they are SO warm. I think I would be willing to upgrade to the real thing and these sparkle ones are so cute!

Get the Holiday Look with #MeijerBeauty

I received beauty products from Meijer to help promote the Meijer Beauty Department. All opinions expressed are my own.

The holidays are filled with parties and reunions with family and friends. This usually includes lots and lots of pictures and you’ll want to look your best. Meijer asked me to create a holiday look with some of my favorite beauty picks. Many times during the season, I am running from work out to an event and I need to make a quick touchup or glamour up my look.

So let’s get started, this was me after a long day at work. I had just run to Meijer to pick up a few items and definitely could use a touchup (also, it’s really hard to take a selfie and not look like a weirdo):

Meijer before

Here are the items I needed to touch up my look:

Meijer supplies

They included Ponds Cleansing Towlettes, Maybelline Eyeshadow Quad in Natural Smokes, Maybelline The Falsies, CoverGirl Outlast Lipcolor in Radiant Red, Maybelline Master Hi-Lighting Blush in Light Bronze and Maybelline Master Kajal Eyeliner in Onyx Rush.

STEP 1

Take a Pond’s Towlette and wipe off your eye makeup. You can also touch up your foundation if you need to. This is me with just foundation (EEK!).

Meijer, no makeup

STEP 2

Take your eyeshadow palatte (which is conveniently labeled) and apply the “Base” color on the entire eye area from lash to brow.

Meijer lid

STEP 3

Next, you want to take the color that says “Crease” and apply it to the crease of your eye using a windshield wiper motion. I tried to count how many times I went back and forth – probably 75-100 motions before it blended the way I wanted it to.

meijer crease

STEP 4

Then take the color that says “Lid” and apply it just to your lid. Now don’t worry here if you are making a mess and the color is all over you eye – we will clean this up at the end.

Meijer lid2

STEP 5

For the next step, I used one of the little applicators that came with the palette to apply the “Eyeliner” color to my lashline both above and below.

meijer lashline

STEP 6

Next up, you apply the black eyeliner to your lashline AND your waterline. This might look sort of gross but I always apply eyeliner to my waterline. It really makes your eyes pop.

meijer eyelinerSTEP 7

Apply your mascara and make sure to cover all of your lashes on the top and bottom. This brush is curved so it helps in that department.

meijer mascara

STEP 8

Take a Q-Tip and clean up under your eyes. I also like to add my concealer after this step so I have a nice clean undereye.

meijer - step8

STEP 9

Apply the blush to the apples of your cheeks. I LOVED this blush – it has a shimmer to it and blends wonderfully!

meijer blush

STEP 10

I was so excited to see this lipcolor at the store. I used to wear CoverGirl Outlast all the time at college parties. It stays on all day and all night! You apply the lipcolor and wait about a minute for it to dry and then you apply the clear color on top of it for shine and to moisturize your lips. It will not move – you can eat, drink, kiss – whatever and when you wake up the next morning it will still be on your lips. You can reapply the clear color as much as you want throughout the night.

covergirl outlast

STEP 11

Apply powder if you want and you are ready to go! While I was doing this tutorial I also curled my hair so I was ready to hit the party. I was much happier with the after pictures, as you can see:

Meijer After

So there you have it – this is pretty much my go-to holiday look right now. Simple yet effective. I would love to know how you glam up your everyday look for the holidays.

Friday Favorites: RepliKate Edition

This week, Will and Kate (The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) visited New York. It was fun to watch the coverage of their visit and to follow along with one of my favorite blogs, What Kate Wore, to see what she was wearing during the trip. What Kate Wore has sort of coined the term “RepliKate” to talk about recreating the Duchess’ looks and accessories. My first item on the list today is the perfect RepliKate!

1. Jenny Packham Clutch for Laura Mercier Ovarian Cancer Fund ($95)

This clutch is a replica of the Jenny Packham clutch created for Kate Middleton when she attended Our Greatest Team Rises Gala dinner at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2012. Apparently, teal is the color for ovarian cancer awareness. This clutch is the same shape and created in identical silk satin to benefit the Laura Mercier Ovarian Cancer Fund. How awesome is it that you can get her exact clutch and help out a great cause at the same time!

 2. Harvey’s Seatbelt Clutches

Harvey’s Seatbelt bags are big in Detroit. I was going to include them in my Detroit/Michigan gift guide until I found out that the company is actually in California. So I figured I would talk about the new clutches today. I was never a huge fan of their initial bags, but I am loving the new clutches they just came out with. These are much more in line with my style. My current favorites are the Bow Clutch ($88) and the Sydney Clutch ($148):

3. Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

If you’re like me, you stayed up late on Tuesday to watch the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. I am debating doing a longer post about all of the fun items, tips and tricks, but in the meantime I am loving this limited edition Heavenly perfume bottle ($250). It is so decadent and would be a great addition to a vanity table. It would be better if they could refill it for you too!

4. Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels ($30)

I first discovered these from a post on Julie Benz’s Instagram page. Julie played Darla on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and she was also a favorite on Dexter. In her post she said that she swore by these and I found that a lot of other celebrities use them too. These would be great before a big photo session or an event that you want to look your best for. You can get them here at Ulta.

5. Go Go Heel Quick Tips

If you are a hard walker, like me, then you probably wear the tips off of your shoes often. For me, it’s usually the left shoe that needs a tip replacement all the time. I don’t always have time to run to the shoe fixer and I don’t want to ruin my nice shoes. Enter Go Go Heel Quick Tips. These are the perfect solution if you just need a quick fix. The packs come in three different cap sizes and prices range around $7.99. I can’t wait to stock up on these to have on hand! I love that they call them a spare tire for your high heel!

Detroit/Michigan Gift Guide

I’ve been meaning to write this post since last year. I was initially a transplant to Michigan, born in Ohio, lived in Pennsylvania for 7.5 years and started high school here in Michigan. So not having grown up here, I didn’t really have an preconceived ideas about Detroit. When I got my first PR job out of college at Pewabic Pottery, a Detroit treasure, I was open to loving the city. After 10 years of working in all different Detroit spaces and currently the Renaissance Center, I have a deep appreciation and love for the city. Because of this, I want to share some of my favorite Detroit things for a fun holiday gift guide.

Pewabic Pottery Twelve Days of Christmas Ornaments ($60/set or $22/ornament)

These are one of my favorites. I was still working at the Pottery in 2005 when they developed this series. Each ornament represents one of the gifts from The Twelve Days of Christmas classic. You can buy them individually or in sets of three. It would be so fun to give someone one of these ornaments every year and they would look beautiful on your favorite Christmas tree.

Pewabic 12 Days

Jenna Kator Lake Superior Handbag ($108)

Jenna Kator is a Michigan designer who creates animal friendly vegan leather handbags with fun Michigan names. Her bags are high quality and beautiful. I loved this recent Lake Superior bag.

supmidd

Shinola The Runwell Contrast Chrono Bracelet Watch, 41mm ($975)

Made right here in Detroit, Shinola’s watches are beautiful. They sell them at Nordstrom, which makes it the perfect purchase to use your triple points day on.

Faygo Candles ($50)

Faygo “Pop” is a Michigan tradition and these candles would make a fun gift! They come in a Faygo 6-pack container with Grape, Orange, Rock & Rye, Redpop, Vanilla Creme and Root Beer fragrances.

KO Photo Vogue Detroit 2 a.m. Prints

Our friend, Amin, is a talented photographer and has created a line of photographs showcasing Detroit at 2 a.m that you can order for your home. These are stunning and I can’t wait to have one in our new home. I am sort of loving the Joe Louis Fist right now.

Reclaim Detroit End Grain Butcher Block ($109)

This is beautiful and so cool, these cutting boards are made of old growth reclaimed lumber from Detroit area homes salvaged by Reclaim Detroit’s deconstruction crews. Each board is handcrafted and unique.

Caliber Detroit Steel Cuff Links ($250)

Caliber Detroit created these cufflinks to eradicate illegal violence in the city. They take weapons found at crime scenes, melt them down and create these cool steel cuff links. The serial number corresponds with a gun that has been removed from the streets. The proceeds from these cufflinks benefit the Caliber Foundation which offers support to persons and communities devastated by gun violence.

Good People Popcorn White Cheddar Salsa ($32)

What says holiday more than a popcorn tin? This popcorn is so delicious and made in Detroit!

These wine racks are designed and manufactured in Detroit out of one single sheet of automotive grade steel. Each rack is completely custom and designed to be hung vertically.

Stormy Kromer Petal Pusher Cap ($44.99)

I’ve been admiring this cap for a while now and I love that their factory is right here in Michigan.

I would love to hear what your favorite Detroit/Michigan made gifts are in the comments!

Pantone’s Color of the Year: Marsala

Pantone has officially named Marsala, a naturally robust and earthy wine red, as the Color of the Year for 2015.

pantone-coy-7

Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute said “Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness. This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.”

To me, Marsala is a deep, earthy wine color. It makes me think of fall and winter. Call it burgundy, maroon, mauve, wine, oxblood or any of those names. Since this is the color to have in 2015, I thought I would share a few items that you can get to start incorporating Marsala into your life:

We’re Buying Our First House!

So it’s been a year since I last talked about buying a house on the blog, November 2013 to be exact. We have gone through a lot of ups and downs in our home search since then. In April, we thought we were buying a house until the deal fell through and after a number of offers, we were discouraged. The market was so competitive and I felt like we were being pushed into getting something too fast. We had started to send my parents out to look at houses during the week because if we didn’t put offers on them they wouldn’t be available by the weekend when we could go out and look. I also felt that prices were being inflated over what the value of the houses were. So after all that craziness, we decided to take a break.

hiatus

I am SO glad that we did! When we started looking again, there were so many options at great prices! I am happy to announce that we are finally buying our house!! Everything is moving forward and looking great and we plan to close on December 15. John and I are thrilled that this is actually happening and very excited for the house that we ended up with. It is the perfect first house for us and we can’t wait until the 15th! I’ve created this fun little countdown clock so you can follow along with me:

In the meantime, I wanted to put together a move-in checklist so we can make the most of December before we have to move all of our stuff in. Here are the top items on my list:

  • Get the vents cleaned out
  • Clean the carpet
  • Get the house deep cleaned
  • Change the locks
  • Get new toilet seats
  • Reprogram the garage door opener
  • Test the smoke/carbon monoxide detectors
  • Get fire extinguishers for each level
  • Check light switches and bulbs
  • Change our address at Secretary of State
  • Pick out paint colors and tape the walls
  • Contact the utility companies
  • Stock the house with toilet paper, trash bags, paper towels and water
  • Pop open a bottle of champagne to celebrate!

As we are first time home owners, I would love to get advice and tips from all of you to add to this list. Stay tuned for more details and pictures after we close!

White Collar “Return to Sender” Recap

Peter (Tim DeKay) is enthusiastic about Elizabeth’s (Tiffani Thiessen) baby news and has decided to start fixing things around the house. Elle wears a teal blouse similar to this one from Trouve ($74):

Trouve

Neil (Matt Bomer) wants to ensure that his deal with the FBI to take down the Pink Panthers is iron clad. In the meantime, he has to take his first meeting with the Panthers and who does he run into? Matt Kellar (Ross McCall) who surprisingly doesn’t blow Neal’s cover. His first mission…steal a priceless stamp.

Mozzie (Willie Garson) pays a visit to Elle and quickly discovers that she is pregnant when she won’t share a glass of wine with him. Elle wears a plum blouse with a white cardigan. I found this Vince Mixed Media Crossover Blouse ($149.99) and this Saks Fifth Avenue Collection Cashmere Long Cardigan ($210) to recreate the look.

vince blouse

Neil and Peter meet with Bianca, their liaison for this mission and Peter gets to pretend to be Neal’s father, which wasn’t too far from the truth. They head off to a private black market auction and Neil impressively steals the stamp that they were after against all odds. I love how he can think on his feet and come up with crazy plans at a moment’s notice.

Unfortunately, the FBI has to confiscate the stamp and Neal is forced to forge it so he has something to deliver to the Panthers. He uses a secret code in the stamp to convince Kellar to authenticate it. He also confronts Kellar about being an informant for Interpol. Kellar reminds him that they both have something to gain if they can work together.

In the end of the episode Peter presents Neal with a signed contract from the Attorney General. If he brings down the Panthers he officially has his freedom. Peter also reveals the news about Elle’s pregnancy and Neal is genuinely happy for him.

I can’t wait to see what will happen with only four episodes left.

If you missed this episode, you can find it on iTunes for $2.99.

Splurge vs. Steal: Mise En Dior Tribal Double-Pearl Earrings

I recently purchased some double pearl earrings from Ily Couture because I loved the look then I discovered that this is a big trend that started with the beautiful Mise En Dior Tribal Double-Pearl Earrings. Imagine my surprise when I realized that they are all the rage right now. Celebrities have been showing off these Dior beauties all over the red carpet:

dior mise en pearl

Now here’s the funny part. The Dior versions are faux pearl earrings with gold-tone hardware, so they are really just designer costume jewelry. They come in all different styles and colors and retail for anywhere between $290-$645. Most of them are sold out and Dior recently raised their prices. Dior touts that you can wear them alone or as a pair. I don’t know if I am fashion forward enough to just wear one earring, so I will stick to wearing mine as a pair. I am wearing the silver ones as I write this post so you can see how they look on:

ily couture

I got my Ily Couture Dual Pearl Studs during one of their recent sales for $4.99. That is a steal if I’ve ever seen one. Some of the variations are also at $11.99 depending on what you want. I got the silver and the hematite versions, but the classic version is $11.99. After seeing all of the Dior looks, I want to get the pearl ones too.

dior steal

Which version of these do you like best and what colors would you wear?

Do you have a splurge that you want me to find a steal for? Let me know in the comments. Or let me know if you find another steal for these Dior earrings.

Scandal “The Last Supper” Recap

Jake (Scott Foley), Olivia (Kerry Washington) and Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) finally come to an agreement about how to handle Rowan (Joe Morton) and Jake gives up the files he has been hiding.

Meanwhile, Olivia gets a new client in Elizabeth North (Portia de Rossi). I like that they agree not to like each other and stick to the job at hand. Olivia is wearing the Check Peplum Jacket from The Limited. It is sold out online, but you can still find it here on eBay.

the limited check peplum

In a sudden turn of events, Vice-President Nichols (Jon Tenney) is almost killed in a car explosion which is rumored to have been set by West Angolian terrorists. Mellie (Bellamy Young) is overcome with emotions and breaks all her rules to have sex with Andrew.

Olivia, Fitz (Tony Goldwyn), and Jake (Scott Foley) decide to bring David Rosen (Joshua Malina) into the take B613 down club to have him help prosecute Eli (Joe Morton). Fitz is pleased that even though Olivia is with Jake, that he still has her number. Olivia isn’t that excited about it though.

Huck (Guillermo Diaz) and Quinn (Katie Lowes) are on the case of Elizabeth North’s bugged phone, which they are able to pin to Cyrus (Jeff Perry). Olivia confronts him and he tells her the whole story about Michael (Matthew del Negro) and how he has to find out what Elizabeth has on him. Cyrus tries to convince Olivia to help him instead of Elizabeth. Olivia wears a sold-out Ralph Lauren Collection Marielle Drape-Panel Coat. This Tommy Bahama Woodley’ Sweater Coat ($298) is similar:

Ralph Lauren shawl coat

Cyrus is pretty upset about the whole situation and tries to avoid Michael to no avail. Huck tells Olivia that Michael did have access to Cyrus’ personal information, but never shared it with Elizabeth. For some reason he was loyal to Cyrus. Olivia wore a sold out Long Sleeve Blouse in Ivory by Derek Lam. This Vince Camuto Long Sleeve V-Neck Blouse w/ Inverted Front Pleat ($79) is similar:

derek lam

Olivia confronts Michael and he leads her to Elizabeth’s private apartment which Huck is able to bug and stake out. Olivia wears an Alexander McQueen Herringbone-Boucle Cossack Coat (sold out). This Princess Seam Wool Coat ($59.99) is similar:

alexander mcqueen

The scene between Mellie and Andrew was so sweet and then he had to go and ruin it by sleeping with Elizabeth North. Quinn’s stakeout ended up overlapping into Huck’s stakeout which he brought his son on. This turns into a disaster with his son witnessing him murder Kubiak.

Olivia tries to trick her father into having dinner as a distractions so she can get the upper hand. She can’t take command and Rowan ends up killing the president’s strike team. He cuts her off and tells her that he will no longer help her and that he is leaving. He has also got the upper hand on David Rosen making sure that all the files are blank.

That was a pretty dramatic episode, but this seems to be the one relationship Olivia can’t “handle.”

What did you think of this week’s episode?

If you missed it, you can still purchase it on iTunes.
