Scandal “Heavy is the Head” Recap

Scandal is back! I repeat Scandal is back! And so is #Olitz! The episode begins with a little bait and switch with hypocrital Sally Langston (Kate Burton) narrating over an extravagant dinner for the Princess of Caledonia. The best part of Olivia (Kerry Washington) and Fitz’s (Tony Goldwyn) reunion is that we get to see her in formal wear again. She wore a couture Rubin Singer gown from the Fall 2015 collection. This Badgely Mischka Strapless Ruffled Gown ($670) is similar. You can also find it here.

Rubin Singer

The White House put out an official statement that Mellie (Bellamy Young) is ill, which is a lie that she is not happy about seeing as she is already dressed for the event in a J. Mendel Off-The-Shoulder Lurex Jacquard Gown ($4,900). This Ralph Lauren Off-The-Shoulder Jersey Gown ($190) is a less expensive alternative:

J Mendel

Abby (Darby Stanchfield) also wore a Rubin Singer gown from the Fall 2015 collection. Her scene with Liv talking about the Princess was great. That is totally something that would happen in real life! This Sophie House Prom Dress ($165) hasa similar color palette and feel.

Rubin SingerAfter the ball, Olivia gets a call from the Queen to report the death of the Princess. Olivia arrives on the scene and uses her trench coat to cover the body from paparazzi. This Calvin Klein Double-Breasted Belted Trench Coat ($99.98) is similar:

Trench

Olivia pays a visit to the Queen and the Prince and agrees to try to get the photos that were taken of the Princess’ body. She wore a Vivienne Westwood Anglomania Woven Wrap Coat (sold out). This Jessie G. Women’s ‘Anastasia’ Wool Blend Vegan Leather Trim Wrap Coat ($89.99) is similar:

Vivienne WestwoodTrying to get the photos back means that Olivia and Quinn (Katie Lowes) have to pay off the paparazzi. Olivia wore this Draped Front Crepe Blouse by Jason Wu ($895) under her coat. This ASOS Drape Front Blouse With Keyhole Detail ($30) is similar:

Jason Wu

After they track down all of the paparazzi, except for one, Olivia has the brilliant idea to give them something else to publish, the tragic photo of a husband identifying his wife at the morgue. When Olivia returns to the office, she realizes that the last paparazzi, isn’t a paparazzi at all…She wore an Alexander McQueen Wool Military Jacket ($2,495) and carried the Prada Saffiano Lux Double-Zip Tote ($2,430). To recreate this look I found a Black Long Sleeve Peplum Waist Asymmetric Blazer ($29.43) and Michael Kors Selma Leather Medium Zip Satchel ($298):

Alexander McQueen

Olivia and Quinn crack the case with a little help from David Rosen (Joshua Malina). Fitz won’t agree to help as he doesn’t want to ruin his opportunity for Navy bases so Olivia confronts the Queen herself. She wore a black and white floral print peplum top. I found this Leaf Print Peplum Top ($24.99) to recreate the look:

peplum tp

Olivia discovers that the Queen is behind the Princess’ death, but she can’t do anything about it because of her non-disclosure agreement. She is able to tell the Prince the truth and he makes the Queen abdicate the throne for good. Olivia wore the Celeste Reversible Coat by Max Mara. I found two similar options in the reverse color, the first, this Vince Camuto Oversized Collar Belted Coat ($219) and the second this Forever 21 Belted Wool-Blend Coat ($69.90):

MaxMara

Out of nowhere, Olivia and Fitz are outed by Sally Langston, with photographic evidence…I wonder who was behind that?

What did you think will happen now that Olivia and Fitz have been outed?

If you missed it, you can still watch it here.

Wine of the Week: Apothic Dark

John and I are huge fans of the Apothic blend so last year, when a friend introduced me to Apothic Dark I knew it would be good. I was saving this review since this is sort of the perfect spooky wine for October.

Apothic Dark

Apothic is under the E.&J. Gallo brand and was named for the mysterious place, Apotheca, where vintners stored their most coveted concoctions in 13th century Europe. Most of the grapes in Apothic Dark are from Lodi, which has been touted as the next Napa. The grapes were fermented at a maximum of 90 degrees which pulls out the fruit notes in the grapes.

apothic dark1

This blend of Petite Syrah, Teroldego and Cabernet combines flavors of blueberry and blackberry with enticing notes of coffee and dark chocolate for a smooth taste.

Apothic is only available for a limited time, so make sure you stock up if you like it!

Have you tried Apothic Dark yet? I would love to hear what you think about it.

Fall Bucket List

I started a Summer Bucket List for the first time this year and I only did so-so at it. For fall, I learned that you have to plan everything out in advance or you won’t make it a priority so that is exactly what I am going to do for fall. In Michigan fall is so much fun with activities like Michigan football, apple orchards, cider mills, fall colors and the changing seasons. I can’t wait to get moving on these activities and enjoy this season as much as we can!

Summer Vacation – Kentucky Part 3

The fourth installment in my summer vacation recap is about our stops at Maker’s Mark, Four Roses and Buffalo Trace distilleries. You can read about the first stop in Cleveland, our first day in Kentucky, and our second day at Jim Beam via the links.

makers mark 5

Our first stop at Maker’s Mark was a hike. It was about an hour drive to get there from our hotel, but we started with that one so we could work our way back through the other distilleries. Maker’s Mark was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1980, so as you tour the grounds you get a peek back in time.

Makers Mark Collage

Most of the distilleries were shutdown for summer so we got a unique look at the cypress fermentation tanks. Some of them have planks that are more than 200 years old.

Makers Mark Collage2

Some of you may know that Maker’s Mark has a distinctive red wax seals on all of its bottles. This was trademarked in 2012 and no other liquor company can use the red wax seal on their bottles. We had the chance to tour the bottling area and see where the bottles are dipped.

makers mark 6

Makers Mark Collage3

As we were checking out the barrels we learned that they put special wood slats into the Maker’s 46 barrels to give it that extra oakey flavor.

makers mark 9

We got to sample all of the different Maker’s Mark varieties in their special tasting room. I especially liked the Maker’s 46:

makers tasting

John and I had a lot of fun in the gift shop where we got to dip our own Maker’s bottles and take them home. They are so cool that I never want to open them!

Makers Collage 4

After Maker’s Mark, we headed over to Four Roses Distillery. We didn’t make it in time for the tour, but they had a patio tasting going on so we signed up for that. I loved the name of Four Roses, which was named after a romance, you can read the full story here.

four roses

We had a little break after this stop and headed over to Wallace Station for a delicious lunch. It was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network. It was the perfect place to stop and right in between our distillery visits.

wallace station

We had a little bit of time to kill as we had signed up for a ghost tour at Buffalo Trace Distillery. When we arrived the distillery was seemingly deserted, setting the stage for the tour.

buffalo trace 1

Buffalo Trace is a National Historic Landmark dating back to 1792 when “The Old Taylor House” was built on the property and still stands today.

buffalo trace2

Buffalo Trace was featured on the TV show Ghost Hunters and is said to be haunted by the ghost of Col. Blanton. On our tour we heard lots of stories and got to visit the haunted sites as well as the Stony Point Mansion where Col. Blanton died in 1959.

buffalo trace

We didn’t see any ghosts, but we did have a complimentary tasting of some of the Buffalo Trace products and I have to take a second and rave about the Bourbon Cream! This stuff is amazing…it puts Bailey’s to shame…but you can only get it at the distillery…so I bought two!

Five on Friday: Wine for Your Face

I love my Wine of the Week features, but today I wanted to talk to you about wine for your face…wine beauty products that is! Here are some cool wine beauty products that you can use while drinking wine:

Tony Moly Red Wine Face Mask ($4)

These face masks are really fun and easy to use. Tony Moly has a whole line of different ingredients to try, but the Wine version caught my eye. There are two in a package and you just keep it on your face for 20 minutes. This particular mask is infused with real red wine extracts and rosemary to address enlarged pores while purifying, refining, and tightening skin.

tony moly mask

Coco Cabernet Custom Vinotherapy Mask ($46)

This custom face mask has both wine and chocolate to make it a decadent treat! It comes dry and then you mix it up before you use it.

grapeseed co

Wine Blot Lip Balm ($10)

29 by Lydia Mondavi is aligned with the famous Mondavi name and you can buy the whole line at Target. I thought this lip balm was perfect for the coming colder season. Apparently grape seed extract is 50 times more powerful than Vitamin E when it comes to protecting your skin, so this gives you a lot of bang for your buck.

wine blot lip balm

Italian Red Grape Shampoo ($8.99)

This one isn’t for your face, but close enough. The ingredients include red grapes native to Italy, organic grape extract, resveratrol and red wine extract. These antioxidants act as UV filters to help correct sun damage. Sugar and coconut oil cleansers remove everyday pollutants and organic kelp and nettle extracts add iron, calcium, potassium and other vitamins and miners to help strengthen each strand of hair. They also have a conditioner too!

Red Wine Resveratrol Nourishing Cream ($45)

This cream protects against signs of aging such as environmental damage, lines, wrinkles and loss of elasticity.

Here Comes the Boom

When you think about “Bringing the Boom” what comes to mind? For me it is fall TV. Have you ever watched a show that leaves you hanging? I can think of a few memorable moments that had me texting my friends or my mom in shock with “Can you believe what just happened?!” I am super pumped for fall TV and when I thought about what kind of show I need popcorn for Scandal, kicking off on September 24, definitely came to mind. If you’ve forgotten how many crazy moments Olivia Pope and company have delivered? Here’s a peek of this season’s premiere and you can’t help but get giddy watching Shonda Rimes #BringtheBoom:

We all know that Olivia Pope lives on popcorn and wine and I figured, what better way to celebrate the premiere on Thursday than with BOOMCHICKAPOP?

Olivia Pope indulging in popcorn and wine

Olivia Pope indulging in popcorn and wine

Olivia is normally eating popcorn as her dinner, but when I want popcorn, I want something light without a ton of calories. That’s where BOOMCHICKAPOP comes in. BOOMCHICKAPOP is a better-for-you snack with simple ingredients, calorie transparency and great taste! They are certified gluten-free and use non-GMO ingredients in all of their products. All of their products are less than 100 calories per cup! NOTE: Per cup, not per serving! So you can have lots and not kill your diet. These are some of their top selling flavors:

  • BOOMCHICKAPOP Sea Salt Popcorn
  • BOOMCHICKAPOP Lightly Sweet Popcorn
  • BOOMCHICKAPOP Sweet & Salty Popcorn
  • BOOMCHICKAPOP White Cheddar Popcorn

When I was looking at where to buy BOOMCHICKAPOP I was surprised to discover that it was readily available at the Rite-Aid within walking distance from my house…Score!

Rite Aid

I selected the Lightly Sweet and Sweet & Salty flavors to try. I also noticed that none of the products contain high fructose corn syrup which is a huge bonus!

IMG_3973I decided I should watch the Scandal season finale to refresh my memory prior to the Season five premiere, so I set out my popcorn and poured a glass of wine:

IMG_3974

I figured I may as well re-watch the Season four Scandal finale to refresh my memory before Thursday, so I roped John and Sport into watching it with me.

IMG_3982

Both flavors of BOOMCHICKAPOP tasted amazing! I couldn’t believe the flavor came in such a low calorie serving. Even Sport loved the few pieces I allowed him to try. I can’t wait until Scandal premieres on Thursday to #BringtheBoom. I will be ready with my BOOMCHICKAPOP popcorn and a glass of Olivia Pope approved wine to celebrate!

For those of you who can’t wait for Halloween, BOOMCHICKAPOP is running a special giveaway. You are invited to share photos and content to Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram using the hashtag #BringTheBoom for a chance to win three Halloween kits (including an array of fun treats and prizes, and could include things such as trick or treat bags, glow bracelets, stay-at-home popcorn & bowl kits, and BOOM pumpkin carving kits), a $50 Target gift card and free BOOMCHICKAPOP! BOOMCHICKAPOP will pick the winners and mail prizes out a week before Halloween. There will be three prizes given away in total. Each include:

  • A ‘Halloween Kit’ Complete with Halloween necessities.
  • A $50 Target gift card
  • Multi-packs of either Sea Salt or Sweet & Salty

Don’t forget to check out the BOOMCHICKAPOP Pinterest boards, here for more ideas on how to #BringtheBoom.

Are you excited for Scandal to #BringtheBoom this season?

Five on Friday: All About Elephants

John and I LOVE elephants. They are beautiful creatures and so sweet. They have a number of similarities to humans and even mourn other elephants in their group. I also love when they hold each other’s tails when walking. Lucky for us one of the zoos close by has elephants and a baby elephant! I have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to elephants to I figured I might as well share with you some of my elephant favorites today.

Elephant Succulent Planter ($38)

This would look adorable on my desk!

Elephant Phone Case ($15.99)

This pink case is everything! You can get it in different colors for different phones and the company will fix it free of charge if it breaks for some reason. All of the adornments are vintage pieces from the 60s and 70s which makes me love it even more!

Me and Mama Elephant Sweatshirt ($38)

This is cute and perfect for bumming around at home. It also comes in purple.

Elephant sweatshirt

Elephant Letter Organizer ($22.50)

This would be another great desk addition for all of my papers, or we could use it at home. If you mount it you can use the trunk on the key holder.

Elephant letter holder

Elephants Family Ring ($17)

This mama and baby elephant ring is so sweet.

Fall Beauty Finds at Meijer

Disclosure: I received beauty products from Meijer to help promote the Meijer Beauty Department. All opinions expressed are my own.

I was thrilled to receive a treasure trove of fall beauty items from Meijer for this post. Even as an adult, fall means a new year and new beauty products. Meijer is a great place to shop to refresh your collection as they have everything from styling products to beauty products all in the Meijer beauty aisle. There were a few things in particular that stood out to me (and I couldn’t believe you could get them at Meijer, how convenient!) and I even tried a new look to share with you.

The first item that caught my interest was the Simple Cleansing Micellar Water. I was thrilled to receive this since I had just discovered Miceller Water (you can read about it in my previous post here).

Meijer fall4

The next items I was stoked to receive were the Garnier Fructis Full & Plush Shampoo & Conditioner. I have baby fine and super thin hair so this was right up my alley.

Meijer fall3

I have been living on fragrance samples for a while so this full size Versace Bright Crystal Eau de Toilette was perfect. I love that Candice Swanepoel is the face of this scent in their new ad:

Versace describes it as “an enthralling and voluptuous fragrance, for the Versace woman who is strong and confident yet feminine, sensual, who loves to be enveloped in a fragrance that tastes of juicy pomegranate grains, iced freshness and shining yuzu.” Let’s just say that this is perfect for me!

Meijer fall7

I also got some fun cosmetics including some amazing new palettes!

Meijer fall

I used the Revlon Colorstay palette in 528 Passionate to create this look below.

Meijer fall9

Revlon guarantees that this eyeshadow won’t crease, fade or smudge for 16 hours. I wore this look at work and it stayed all day. I watered down my eyeliner brush and used the dark color for eyeliner to really make my eyes pop.

Meijer Collage

I also used the Loreal Lumi highlighter in Ice on the high points of my face. If you’ve never used highlighter before, they have a handy diagram on the back of the bottle to help you.
