Five on Friday: Power Outage Supplies

Since we recently had a massive power outage due to some crazy storms in Michigan, I figured I would share some must haves to get you through a black out. I wish I would have had some of these during our blackout; thank goodness our power was only out for 24 hours.

1. Sleeping Bag ($99.95)

When the power is out, it can get really cold in the house. To stay warm and actually get some sleep, a sleeping bag is the way to go.

2. Flashlights ($11.99)

This sounds obvious, but I realized that we don’t have any flashlights around the house. I ended up using the light from my phone which drains the battery. These are cute and come in a six-pack so we can keep them around.

3. LED Wireless Lantern ($28.46)

I was contemplating purchasing an oil lamp because we used to have them around the house when I was younger, but this LED lantern seems like the better choice. If I had one for each floor, I think that would make a HUGE difference during the next blackout.

4. Ambient Weather WR-089 Weather Band ($20.99)

This seems like a no-brainer for a blackout, It is a portable radio, flashlight, 5-way charger all in one. You can charge it from an adapter or using its solar panel, which is AWESOME! This just seems like a good thing to have in your house and car at all times.

5. Board Games

We have very few board games at our house, which makes for a boring blackout. I started looking for some games that we could play during a blackout with just two people. My tops picks include Scrabble, Battleship, Jenga, Operation, Chess/Checkers/Backgammon set, Connect 4, and Chinese Checkers.

What items do you have tucked away for a power outage?

Bachelor 21 – Women Tell All

It’s time for the Women Tell All a.k.a. auditions for Bachelor in Paradise. The girls started off playing nice, but it didn’t take long for things to get ugly.

Sarah Vendal wore the Style Stalker Adelie Romper which you can rent for $60. This Lilly Pulitzer Tiki Lace Romper ($198) is similar:

Danielle Maltby wore a custom-made white jumpsuit. This Black Luxe Jersey Drape Front Jumpsuit ($96) is similar:

I felt a little bad for Taylor, but as with anything on this show, you have to focus on your own relationship with Nick and not worry about what the other girls are doing. For some reason he couldn’t leave Corinne alone. She was never going to win that battle because Corinne was laser focused on Nick. Taylor wore the Lioness Carrie Dress ($83):

Corinne was next to the hotseat and as annoyed as I was by some of her antics, she had her eye on the prize the whole time and was unapologetic for being herself. I have to admire that confidence. Corinne wore a For Love and Lemons Tarta Long Sleeve Mini Dress ($224) and Steve Madden Stecy Dress Sandal ($31.60):

Kristina comes up next and she is definitely a fan favorite. She wore the Lulus Outstanding Features Red Midi dress ($46):

Danielle Lombard wore Lulus Name of Love Black Lace dress ($74). This AQUA Sleeveless Lace Tiered Dress ($66) is similar:

Now enter our next Bachelorette, Rachel Lindsay! She wore a Dion Lee Axis Sleeve Knit Dress ($765). I found two similar options, this LIKELY Packard One-Shoulder Dress ($198) and this Girl Talk One Shoulder Midi Dress ($199):

Based on tonight’s “audition” who do you think will get invited to Bachelor in Paradise this year?

Beauty and the Beast

I was thrilled to get a sneak peak of Beauty and the Beast last week. I hadn’t seen the animated version in years, but boy did this bring back memories. Belle was always my favorite princess. As a child I was constantly reading, on the bus, during recess, in math class, under my covers with a flashlight, you name it – I read it. Belle is my spirit animal, she dreamt of far away places and exciting adventures. I can relate. Watching this move reminded me of being a child with a world of possibilities ahead of you. Needless to say I LOVED it!

I highly recommend seeing the movie in 3D, it just made it – especially the “Be Our Guest” montage. To celebrate the movie, I wanted to share some of the fun Beauty and the Beast accessories that are out there for adults. Yes that’s right, Beauty and the Beast is not just for the kids anymore!

Beauty and the Beast Stained Glass Rose Compact ($12)

This is so beautiful and I’m sure it would receive tons of compliments every time you pulled it out of your bag.

Beauty and the Beast Limited Edition Fine China Tea Set ($249.95)

This is pricey, but how AMAZING! I would start drinking tea just to use this set!

Lay Around the Castle Shirt ($23.50)

I love this take on the “Be Our Guest Song.”

Enchanted Rose Crossbody Bag ($59.95)

This is so little and cute! It would make the perfect bag for a whimsical outing.

Luke Henderson Book Clutch with Brushes ($45)

This is a really cute brush set. The front says “Beauty is Found Within.”

Vintage Style Yellow Stretch Cap Sleeve Swing Dress ($68)

In case you wanted to dress up as Belle, I found THE dress. This is perfect for any event and not too costumey.

Beauty and the Beast Journal ($19.95)

This journal is just stunning and would add some whimsy to a boring day at work.

Off-the-Shoulder Graphic Tee ($10.49)

I love this part of Belle’s song and love how feminine this shirt is. It was on super sale when I wrote this, so a great deal all around.

Disney Beauty And The Beast Note Card Box Set ($25.41)

How fun would it be to receive one of these in the mail? There are 20 beautiful cards in this collection.

Floral Lace Cold-Shoulder Dress ($32.99)

This dress was inspired by the movie and it is SO adorable.

Have you seen the movie yet? What’s your favorite part of Beauty and the Beast?

Bachelor 21 – Week 10

We started this episode with Raven’s morning after (which was totally overdone btw). Nick met up with Rachel next for their overnight date. As they are in Finland and the frigid weather, there isn’t a ton of fashion to cover this week. Everything was more functional. I’m not going to lie, but I think the penguin onesie may have did her in…

Vanessa started her overnight date with a Woolrich Down Parka ($789). This similar Women’s Arctic Down Parka ($199.99) is similar for less:

I love watching Nick and Vanessa together, you can see the chemistry between them and just the way they talk about each other…something special is happening. Things started to get serious as the date progressed and they were trying to work out some serious issues. Vanessa wore a Woolrich White Collection Women’s Wool Blanket Coat with Belt ($550):

These two keep getting cuter. After a deep conversation it seems like things are moving faster than any of his other relationships. Vanessa wore a cold shoulder sweater to keep her warm. This Chunky Open Shoulder Top ($45) is similar:

At the rose ceremony, Raven looked fantastic covering up everything with just a keyhole of cleavage in the Stone Cold Fox Victoria Dress ($93). This “Danni” Black Mockneck Long Sleeve Keyhole Sweater Dress ($34.99) is similar:

Vanessa wore a va-va-voom mermaid cut dress with a plunging sweetheart neckline from Boohoo. It is unfortunately sold out, but you can get this Trumpet Dress from Hebeos for just $132.99:

Rachel looked fierce in her rose ceremony dress, which was the perfect ending to her journey and beginning to her adventure as our next Bachelorette. Her dress is from Madison James ($378). This Vince Camuto Embellished Keyhole Halter Gown ($188) is a similar look for less:

What are your thoughts on the final two? Will it be Raven or Vanessa in the end?

If you missed this episode you can still get it on iTunes.

The Miracle Morning – 60 Days

I wanted to give a little update to my original Miracle Morning post. I recently hit the 60 day mark and wanted to share some of my tips and tricks for my SAVERS and hopefully get some tips from you if you’re following along at home.

Silence

I am OBSESSED with the Headspace app. The first 10 days are free and then you subscribe for a nominal fee. I recommend doing the first 10 days free and then subscribing afterwards. I have a few free month trial codes if anyone is interested. The first two people to email me at elizabeth@detroitduchess.com can have them. I will put you on the list after that in case I get more. Also let me know if you are using this because we can be meditation buddies!

Affirmations

For my affirmations, I got an app called “Think Up.” You can type your affirmations and then record yourself saying them. Every morning I play them back to myself.

Visualization

To help visualize my goals, I downloaded the HayHouseVB app, which is essentially an online vision board. I like that you can create a bunch of different boards and I have a lot of fun with this. Plus they are always with me and I can look at them anytime.

Exercise

Since we are in the winter months, I’ve had to find some alternatives to walking as it is FREEZING outside. When I lost weight in the past, I was an avid follower of The FIRM workout plan. I found out that The FIRM was acquired by Gaia and that you can get all of their workout videos from the Gaia app. So I went ahead and got myself a subscription. This has been one of the best investments I’ve made! I LOVE these workouts and I love being able to do them on our Apple TV. You can find all of The FIRM workouts here. I also like that I can get any kind of workout I want at anytime anywhere from Gaia. Here’s a little taste from YouTube in case you’ve never done one before:

Reading

I finished 10% Happier, my pick from the first 30 days and now am onto Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. This one was recommending by Hal Elrod and he noted it was where he first heard about affirmations. The book is interesting because it was written in 1937 and published during the Great Depression. Most of it still holds up today and I love that it is a collection of real world examples of 20 years of studying successful people.

Scribing

This has probably been the hardest area for me because I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to be doing here. I did end up purchasing the official Miracle Morning Journal because I like the SAVERS checkboxes. You can get a free sample here.

How are you sticking to The Miracle Morning?

Bachelor 21 – Week 9

We pick up right where Nick left off, with Andi popping by for a visit. This was equal parts awesome and awkward. These two have great chemistry together. I am still a little sad that she didn’t pick Nick on her season. I haven’t read her book yet but am hoping to soon-hopefully it explains a lot.

Andi definitely upped the fashion game this episode looking fantastic as usual. She wore these amazing Balenciaga Graphic suede ankle boots ($1335). They are still available in red. She also wore a sold out Vince Asymmetric Leather Jacket and sold out Vince Smooth Leather Leggings. To recreate her look you can snag this BB Dakota Laverne Faux Leather Jacket ($98), Aritzia Daria Pant ($135) and these insane look alike Charles David Robbi Booties ($89.95):

In the meantime, Nick’s other women are gathering for the rose ceremony. Vanessa is killing it again in her Nou Taupe Crossover Bust Maxi Dress ($214):

Rachel wore a Long Boucle Coat from Maje ($322.50) and a one shoulder green gown. To recreate her look try this Andrew Marc Laura Coat ($249) and this Lauren Ralph Lauren One-Shoulder Brooch Gown ($160):

Ultimately, Nick sent Corinne home and took his remaining ladies to Finland for the rest of the journey. Raven gets the first Fantasy Suite Date and they kick it off in a Finnish pub. She wore the Woolrich Two Tone Motif Sweater ($54.99):

The rest of their date gets pretty awkward with Raven revealing too much personal information on national television. She wore an off-the-shoulder red sweater. I thought this Free People Alana Slouchy Sweater ($64.80) was similar but wouldn’t fall off as much as hers did:

What did you think about Corinne’s exit and Raven’s Fantasy Suite date?

Beauty Commandments with Meijer Beauty

Disclosure: I received sample products and a gift card from Meijer in exchange for this post. All opinions expressed are my own.

Meijer just sent me some fantastic loot to try out and it got me thinking about a few of my beauty routines. We all have those things that we know we should do, but half the time we forget, or don’t have time, or are just lazy. I thought I would take this opportunity to share some of my beauty commandments and this year actually stick to them.  Some of these I am better at than others, but I will tell you that I am never sorry about doing them.

Always Take Off Your Makeup

I would like to say that I wash my face every night and do my full 5-step beauty routine. I should…but I don’t. The one thing I am consistent about is always taking off my makeup. Without fail I always use a facial wipe to remove my makeup and clean my face before bed. If you have ever gone on a trip with me or stayed the night at my house, I will offer you one too. These facial wipes from Yesto are perfect for sensitive skin with the cucumber or for problem skin with the tomato.

Have a Foot Routine

This sounds funny, but it’s necessary. I get bi-monthly pedicures but I still have cracked heels. This is why I need to be better about my nightly foot routine. Always slather on your foot cream before bed and then put socks on your feet. You will see a difference after just one night! Click here to check out my recommendation for a good foot cream. You should also be using the Amope in between pedicures to keep the dead skin to a minimum.

Treat Yo’ Self with a Face Mask

You should be a using a face mask at least once per week. Why is this so hard? It can be 10-30 minutes depending on the mask, but I’m not doing it as consistently as I should be. I have so many masks that I could probably use a different one for every day in the month (there’s a blog post idea), but I’m really digging these L’Oreal Pure Clay Masks. They are great at pulling out impurities and clearing out your pores. Every week I try to use my Biore porestrips, do my at home microdermabrasion, and then put on a mask. It’s like going to the spa – I don’t know why I’m not trying to sneak it in every day!

Moisturize!

I am great at this one. After my daily shower, I always use a good moisturizer. Check out this post for a few suggestions. It’s best to apply lotion after you shower and your pores are open. It helps lock in the moisturizer for the whole day.

Brush and Floss

I’m a stickler for this one. My best feature is my smile, so it’s important to have good dental health. You can also perk up that smile with a little help from the Colgate Optic White system. Especially with all that red wine you had the night before (who me?).

If you need an extra whitening boost, you can also try out these Crest Whitestrips. I would save them for a special occasion, like before a big event or when you are going to be photographed.

Wash Your Makeup Brushes

I’m the worst at this, but washing your brushes once a week will help prevent acne, infections and will extend the life of your brush. It also will help reduce the amount of facial oils that get into your shadows, blushes, and powders. This would actually be the perfect thing to do while you’re waiting on that face mask to dry.

Protect Yourself

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! The sun is your worst enemy in the fight against aging. You should be applying sunscreen to your face (preferably everywhere that sees the light) every day before you add your foundation. This will help prevent sun damage and reduce age spots, wrinkles, and maybe even skin cancer. Don’t forget to apply it to your hands and décolletage as well!

Discard Your Mascara Every Three Months

If you are trying to remember when you opened that last tube then throw it out right now because it’s probably too old. This one baffles me because mascara is probably one of the least expensive products out there but we keep it FOREVER. I try to track mine by quarters so I know that on April 1, it’s time for a new tube.

 Condition Your Hair

Let’s be honest…our hair takes a beating. From daily washes, to hairdryers, to curling irons and bleach it’s no wonder that our hair gives us split ends and breakage. A weekly hair mask is a must – it can help repair some of that damage. Now, your hair is dead so it’s not like its miraculously going to recover or repair itself, but a moisturizing hair mask can act as a band-aid for those split ends until you decide to trim them. The first one is the L’Oreal Everpure Repair Remedy Balm to restore strength and brilliance. Then there is this Extraordinary Clay Pre-Shampoo Mask that is for oily roots (me, me, me!) and you use this one before you shampoo to absorb oils and impurities on the scalp.

Hydrate

This is the hardest one for me because I’m terrible at drinking water, but it makes such a difference in your skin. The elasticity, plumpness, redness and irritation are all affected by how much water you take in.

For one special reader, I’m giving away the Colgate Optic White toothbrush, toothpaste and mouthwash, along with 3 boxes of Crest Whitestrips. Enter the giveaway below to get in the running for a pearly white smile:

Bachelor 21 – Week 8

Nick ends the trip in Bimini by giving all the women roses to take them to hometown dates. First up is Raven in Hoxie, Arkansas. During the date, Raven finds out her dad is cancer free, which makes for a special moment. Nick mentions that their relationship is moving the fastest and I think that’s a pretty good sign that he’s into her. They went mud-bogging, so no exciting fashion to show on that date.

Next up is Dallas, Texas where Nick meets Rachel’s family. Rachel wore a fabulous Off White Cold Shoulder Tuxedo Jacket from Love Culture (sold out). If you take a closer look, you’ll notice that this is a cold shoulder vest, but she doesn’t put her arms in the “sleeves.” This 1. STATE Collarless Open Front Long Vest ($119) is similar:

She is also sporting the Stella and Dot Signature Engravable Bar Necklace ($59):

Corinne’s hometown date was interesting, I suspect that the shopping spree was producer funded. I think Corinne really thought she had something, but the writing is on the wall, this was essentially her first one-on-one date.

On to Canada for Vanessa’s hometown. The chemistry between these two is electric. Vanessa wore a cool wool and leather coat which is sold out from Zara. I found this Belle by Badgley Mischka Solid Long Sleeve Coat ($99.97) and this Vera Wang Taylor Wool-Blend Coat ($175.99) to recreate the look:

Vanessa is such a gem, you can really see her heart in this episode. Not to mention she is beautiful. She wore a sold out fur vest from Zara and these great leather pants with zippers on them. To recreate the look I found this Faux Fur Vest from Chadwicks ($59.99) and Scuba Hip Zip Leggings from Express ($35.94):

Now Nick has to decide between his ladies…Corinne thinks she is a shoo-in based on their hometown date. As she is contemplating from the balcony she wore a great sold out Bebe Faux Fur Ombre Coat. I found this similar Super Star Dip Dyed Faux Fur Coat ($67.92) if you want the look for yourself:

And cue to next week, where Andi Dorfman pops back into Nicks life…

Five on Friday: Water Bottles

One of my goals this year was to drink more water. I know, I know, that was my goal last year. But last year I didn’t have any of these adorable water bottles which makes all the difference! I do find that not being able to see how much water I have left does make me drink more as weird as it sounds. If you’ve seen any cute ones let me know so I can add them to my collection!

1. NAMA STAY OUT LATE ($19.50)

This one started it all! I bought this at Bath & Body Works and was in love at first sight. They have other ones too (which I may also have to go back and get) but I couldn’t leave without this one.

2. This Might Be Wine ($21)

I was served this adorable water bottle in an Instagram ad and had to make it mine. LivLuvShop has really cute stuff and I’m sure I’ll be ordering again in the future.

3. Lilly Pulitzer for Starbucks

I called a number of stores trying to get one of these limited edition water bottles, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be. These will be available online on February 28, so be prepared. There are four different fun designs.

4. Sip Happens ($9.98)

LOVE the colors and the saying on this one and it’s a great price.

5. Monogrammed ($34.99)

These are just pretty and fun! I would love to have a personalized one!

Which ones are your favorites?

Bachelor 21 – Week 7

So last week Nick left us with a pretty dramatic freak out, but don’t worry, after a chat with Chris Harrison he is all better. Now he can take the girls to Bimini, which I looked up so I could tell you that it is in the Bahamas. I had never even heard of it before. The girls seemed pretty excited about going there though. Vanessa got her second one-on-one date much to Corinne’s chagrin who hasn’t had a one-on-one. Vanessa wore a sold out Fringe Happy Together Blue Lace Strapless Romper. This Lovers + Friends Henna Romper ($53.40) is similar:

Vanessa is smokin hot in her evening look – no wonder Nick is smitten with her. She told Nick that she was in love with him and his response was really weird. I’m not sure where this leaves them. Vanessa wore the Lucy Slinky Knot Gather Detail Midi Dress ($30):

On the group date, Corinne tries to get Nick’s attention right off the bat by stripping down to her bikini. Kristina called her bluff and it appeared that Nick only had eyes for her. Kristina wore a Crochet Fringe Sweater Tank ($25) which made for a really cute cover up:

During the evening portion of the date Kristina wore a sold out ASTR black romper and a great double layer pendant necklace. To recreate the look I found this La Blanca Crocheted-Trim Long-Sleeve Romper Coverup ($95) and Stella and Dot Aria Pendant Necklace ($98):

We see Raven again in a Week 3 look, the sold out Stylestalker Sofala Midi Dress. This J.O.A. Scalloped Lace Midi Dress ($99) is similar:

It must have been her lucky dress, because Raven got the group date rose and a guaranteed hometown date. Danielle gets the next one-on-one date and just as it seems to be progressing nicely, Nick sends her home. She wore a sold out Nasty Gal Romper, but this Lace-Trim Surplice Romper ($32.99) is similar.

At this point Corinne has had it. She’s received no attention from Nick so she decides to put it all on the line and visit Nick in his room to “show” him how she feels. She wore a sold out Zara blouse, leather pants, Louboutins and her platinum vagine to pull out all the stops. You can get this similar Vince Camuto Georgette & Jersey Faux Wrap Blouse ($74):

Rachel was pumped for her one-on-one date and they had a local, casual date hanging out in Bimini. Rachel wore a stylish double split front maxi skirt. I found this Slit Maxi Skirt from Love, Fire ($45) to recreate her look:

Before I wrap up, this was the week that Jimmy Kimmel announced Rachel as our next Bachelorette. You can watch the clip below:

Rachel wore a Cushnie Et Ochs Asymmetric Open-Side Cami Dress ($1,395.00). This Bec & Bridge Onyx Asymmetrical Dress ($108) is similar:

What do you think about Rachel as The Bachelorette?
